I may be wrong (because i've never checked) but it seems, from memory, that when sean ervine opens the bowling he does well and if he doesn't open he's borderline crap.

maybe he responds to confidence being placed in him. any thoughts!?

I have found that happens to quite a few bowlers. Usually it's your two best bowlers that open the bowling. It's the captain's confidence in the bowler that really lifts them.
