A Refreshing attitude

Durham are intending on starting the season with just one overseas player (and two dodgy ones Benkenstein and Breese) but it means that they have 8 spaces for their own young talent.

This for me is the way to go. If you are going to have two Kolpaks or passport professionals then you should not allow the young players to suffer by using your full quota of overseas players.

County cricket is short of good spinners so I understand the need to recruit some good overseas spinners. As far as batsmen are concerned, the most successful seem to come from Australia or South Africa. Apart from that I think County clubs should give most of the opportunities to home-grown talent and players qualifying for England.

I think it is a great decision england as a country is right now the melting pot of talent from all places. If more of a chance is given to local talent england can produce an excellent side with plenty of options... you all dont need to import players from other nationalities you already have em.. monty panesar.. sajid mahmood... usman afzal and a lot of young englishmen like them will now get a chance to shine!!!

I think Martyn has finally had enough of our amazing bowling talent propping up the England team () that he's finally come up with a brilliant idea - develop even more talent and play it, and dump Mick "Economy" Lewis for good. Cracking idea, and with the new singings I think we should make fourth or fifth next season, especially if the ideas of Phil Mustard and consistency can somehow be fused...

I think that the counties should only be allowed one overseas player per year, any more than that and it is bound to stifle any emerging young players, the problem is that counties want:-
a) Immediate success
b) To get overseas players to attract more spectators, Lancashire have always adopted this policy.
England will ultimately suffer IMO.

Well both Durham and Lancs will be playing just the one "overseas" player next year. Glamorglum I think have decided they can't afford any and for 2008 only one will be allowed per team anyway.

Also Durham have added a caviat to the decision, in that they will look at things again once the season is underway.
Code for "if Mike Hussey is available for part of the season we're having him" do you think?

I think that is entirely plausible, and I would be having Hussey for any part of the season he was available for! However, if he is not the approach to have just one overseas player in preparation for 2008 is a sound one.
