The problem IMO is an English one, I don't think anyone would argue that England are not a World force in Test cricket, but we have been at the bottom of the pile for a long time now in one day cricket, with only Bangladesh and Zimbawe ranked lower.
If I remember Australia had seperate managers for the Test and one day sides, there must have been a reason for them to try this, and they are light years ahead of England in the shortened version.

Well I think it all should be seperate to be honest - but lets take Harmison in isolation, he does not tour well at the best of times, so the sooner he gets home after a Test series the better IMO. to me he just is not a one day bowler, neither is Mahmood and getting carted in ODI's will just sap the confidence from both of them.
Flintoff with his injuries, surley it's mindless to leave him to play a 7 or a nine day one day series, again he would be bette home resting for the next Test series.
