VB Selections

In 12 days most of the Academy will be going home. Who will be chosen? From the Test team Hoggard and Panesar will go home.

1 Strauss
2 Bell
3 Cook
4 Vaughan
5 Joyce
6 Pietersen
7 Collingwood
8 Flintoff
9 Jones
10 Dalrymple
11 Harmison
12 Anderson
13 Lewis
14 Mahmood
15 Broad
16 Giles

Gough will be hoping for a place
I don't think Read will be chosen again. Next tour someone like Davies might get a go as reserve.
If Cook doesn't get some runs soon then Shah or Bopara could join the team
If Harmison doesn't get some wickets soon Tremlett could be a pick.
Will Vaughan be captain?

Why on earth would you send Hoggard home ?
You still need quality bowlers in one dayers.

I guess the selectors will want to get as close as possible to their ideal World Cup XI.. so somthing like:

1. Strauss
2. Bell
3. Vaughan
4. Pietersen
5. Collingwood
6. Dalrymple
7. Flintoff
8. Jones / Read
9. Giles / Blackwell
10. Lewis
11. Anderson

The dream is obviously to get Tresco and Simon Jones back into the frame.... but in their absense the above looks to me like the most likely crew (albeit maybe not in that order: they might swap Vaughan and Strauss around, or even Vaughan and Bell).

When did Hoggard last play in a ODI? This year had two games in India and was wicketless when he was called up for injury cover.

26 games 32 wickets at 36.00 econ 5.29 s/r 40.81

That would be a bit like playing Bracken in the Test team.

Rachaels team seems good enough, but where is Panesar?? England need to play Panesar in the ODIS as well... since first they wouldnt play him in this form of the game because he was being kept for Test Cricket. Now obviously he aint playing that so you gotta try him in the ODI's at least or what is he there for?? getting tea?

To their credit the management have expressed concern about Panesar developing bad habits if he plays ODIs: they want an attacking SLA to win them Test matches... and want him to concentrate on excelling in the long form of the game.

Bearing in mind that Blackwell is actually an accomplished ODI spinner... and Dalrymple's a good spin-bowling all-rounder... it's a sensible move.

The original spinner in ODI's was Giles and he was then replaced by Blackwell who did quite a good job. When both he and Giles were injured in came Dalrymple and later Yardy. Of the four I think Dalrymple is the better cricketer and hope he keeps his place in the team. Now Giles is back in the reckoning will he get his place back or will Yardy be the reserve. I don't think Panesar has enough experience to be in the one day team if we are relying only on his bowling. He has played 11 games compared to Dalrymple's 98.

Are England good enough to edge out New Zealand to make the finals?

The Kiwis have a good solid team built around Fleming,Bond and Vettori and the last time they played in the tri-series here(2001/02) they made the finals with South Africa.

I am not assuming Australia are a walk up start for the finals but it is a rare event when another team wins the trophy.
