The Academy

The Academy 2001 -

15 players were picked for the first intake. Flintoff asked to join to enhance his chance to play for England after being dropped. The Academy at Loughborough hadn’t been built and was based in Perth with Rod Marsh in charge. Many players hoped to play for England but only half managed to do so. Some players came back and found it hard to shine. None of the players that played for England have moved counties. Of the 9 who haven’t played for England 2 have been dropped by their counties and 5 have moved counties and only 2 are still with the same county. Rod Marsh tried to get as many players from the Academy to play for England but since he has gone back to Australia there are more players over 30 joining the ODI side. We have had Udal, Lewis, Nixon, Loye and Chapple.

Bell (24) – Played for England Under 19. In Academy side 2001/2/4. In England Test and ODI teams, debut 2004 – central contract. 23 Tests and 35 ODIs.

Strauss (29) – In England Test (2004) and ODI (2003) teams – central contract. 36 Tests and 73 ODIs.

Harmison (28) – Played for England Under 19. In England Tests (debut 2002) and retired from ODIs (debut 2003). – central contract. 50 Tests and 46 ODIs.

Flintoff (29) – Played for England Under 19. In England Test and ODI (1998) teams – central contract. 67 Tests 114 ODIs.

Jones (28) - In Academy 2001/2/3. In Test team but injured (debut 2002) Has played some ODIs. Central contract. 18 Tests and 8 ODIs.

Key (27)– Played for England Under 19. At Academy 2001/5/6. Played Tests (debut 2002) and ODIs (2003) – Never centrally contracted. 15 Tests and 5 ODIs.

Tremlett (25) - Played for England Under 19. Played 6 ODIs debut 2005 – injury prone. Chosen for AshesTests and Pakistan tour but never played due to form and injuries.

Wagh (30) – Had some knee injuries but averaged 40.12. Decided to move from Warks to Notts for 2007. Included in Provisional 30 for 2004 ICC CT.

Kenway (28) - Average 27.49 and dropped by Hants. Not with a county at present. Unlikely to play for England.

Peng (24) – Played for England Under 19. Was with Durham and moved to Glamorgan .

Wood (29) – Played for England under 19. Still at Yorks.

Wallace (25)– Played for England Under 19. At Academy 2001/2. Still at Glamorgan . Never mentioned when selectors talk of keepers.

Swann (27) Played for England Under 19. In Academy side 2001 and 2004. Left Northants for Notts.

Schofield (28) Played for England Under 19. Dropped by Lancs, and found it hard to find a county but now with Surrey. Still hoping to play for England.

Kirby (29) Moved from Yorkshire to Gloucs.

Tudor (29)– Played for England Under 19. Played for England before joining Academy 2001 and 2002. Injured at Surrey and dropped and joined Essex and has had injuries there as well. Chances of playing for England as slight if he stays fit as there are quite a few bowlers in queue but has an advantage of being able to bat.

If anyone is interested I can do the 2002 intake next.

I'm not too sure about Rikki Clarke having gone OK/ having promise. He's another one of these bits and pieces players, who is no good at either discipline for international cricket but keeps getting picked every now and again and then fails.

Darksideofthemoon - good post it is interseting to see which of the acadamy players have succeeded and which have failed. It is also interesting to see how good the selectors foresight was in selecting players to go to the acadamy.

Academy 2002 –

17 Players

The Academy at Loughborough wasn’t ready so the team was back at Perth. Bell, Jones, Tremlett and Tudor came back for a second stint. 20 players were named in a provisional squad during the season but several players didn’t make the cut. They were Bresnan, Bulbeck, Franks, Joyce, Lumb, Tredwell, Whiley. Wagg was injured. Anderson and Clarke were late call ups after impressing in county cricket.

Bell (24) – Played for England Under 19. In Academy side 2001/2/4. In England Test and ODI teams, debut 2004 – central contract. 23 Tests and 35 ODIs.

Panesar (24) Played for England Under 19. Played 13 Tests (2006) and 9 ODIs (2007) for England – central contract. Now a cult figure. Caused a national outcry when left out of the 1st and 2nd Ashes Tests in Australia.

Ali (26) – Played for England Under 19. Played 1 Test and 14 ODIs (debut 2003) Selected for 2003 WC Provisional 30.

Batty (29) Played for England Under 19. Played 7 Tests (2003) and 7 ODIs. (2002)

Blackwell (28) Called up with Ali and Anderson for the VB Series from the Academy. Played 1Test (2006) and 34 ODIs. (2002)

Jones (28) - In Academy 2001/2/3. In Test team but injured (debut 2002) Has played some ODIs. Central contract. 18 Tests and 8 ODIs.

Clarke (25) In Academy 2002/4/5/6 .Played 2 Tests and 20 ODIs. (2003) Selected for 2007 Provisional 30 squad.

Anderson (24) Played for England Under 19. Played 16 Tests (2003) and 57 ODIs (2002). Was called up to the VB Series 4 years ago from the Academy shortly after they arrived in Perth. Currently holds the best strike rate in ODI cricket of all English bowlers past and present and is 5th in the list of leading ODI wicket takers. Also the first English bowler to take an ODI hat-trick.

Tremlett (25) - Played for England Under 19. Played 6 ODIs debut 2005 – injury prone. Chosen for AshesTests and Pakistan tour but never played due to form and injuries.

Troughton (27) Grandson of Dr Who actor Patrick Troughton. Played in 6 ODIs. (2003)

Read (28) Played for England Under 19. Played 15 Tests (1999) and 36 ODIs (2000) before going to the Academy and also afterwards. Graveney keeps selecting him for international cricket but Fletcher doesn’t want to play him.

Hogg (23) Played for England Under 19. Selected for 2003 WC Provisional 30.

Muchall (24) Played for England Under 19.

Stevens (30) Selected for World Cup 2003 Provisional 30.

Wallace (25)– Played for England Under 19. At Academy 2001/2. Still at Glamorgan . Never mentioned when selectors talk of keepers.

Wagg – (23) Was at Warwickshire but was dropped because drug tested positive for cocaine. He went to Holland to coach young cricketers for 1 year and then came back and was signed by Derbyshire.

The Academy - 2003

The state of the art Academy was ready at Loughborough at a £5 million cost. According to Marsh this was the worst Academy squad aside from a couple of players.

Newman (27) - His fielding was so bad Marsh was unable to play him.

Napier (27) - Played for England Under 19. Hasn't really come on at Essex due to injuries

Pieterson (26) - Picked for the Academy before he qualified for England. Spent 4 years qualifying for England at Notts and then moved to Hants. Has played 23 Tests and 42 ODIs. ICC Emerging Player of the Year 2005, ICC One-Day Player of the Year 2005, awarded the MBE 2005, Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2006. 2 Test Man of the Match awards and 4 ODI Man of the Match awards.

Mahmood (25) - Played 8 Tests and 19 ODIs. First of three Academy tours, had on 6 first class wickets when chosen.

Jones (28) - Sent to the Academy to get match fit for the series in the West Indies.

Prior (25) - Played for England under 19. At Academy 2003/4/6/7. Played 12 ODIs.

Tredwell (25) - Played for England Under 19. Captained the Academy side when Gidman was injured. Marsh thought he had a good cricketing brain .

Smith (29) - Marsh wasn't keen to take Smith but he got on the tour as a consolation prize from being dropped from the Test team. Didn't want to get out and batted ultra slowly. Was at Kent and moved to Middlesex and will be captain for the 2007 season.

Lumb (27) - Moved from Yorkshire end of 2006 to further his international career.

Shafayat (22) - Played for England Under 19. Moved back to Notts from Northants end of 2006 as more first class places became available

Francis (28) - Played for England Under 19. Struggled to hold down a place in the last year or two.

Ali (26) - Played for England Under 19. Kadeer moved from Warks to Gloucs in 2005.

Wagg (23) Played for England Under 19. Was at Warks but was dropped because drug tested positive for cocaine. Went to Holland to coach young cricketers for 1 year and then came back and was signed for Derbyshire.

Khalid (26) - Faded from view - behind Batty and Price at Worcs.
