| Fletcher to quit http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cric...nd/6572149.stm Looks like many of us will get our wish. A shame he had to go at such a low point. |

| Is peter moores going to be a good stop gap ? Or is going to be a bit sven/steve new-boss-same-as-the-old-boss sort of thing. We should get decent candidates stepping forward though. We have an academy set up and decent-ish test side trying to break out from the current one who loves itself too much.

| I don't believe that Peter Moores has worked that closely with Fletcher for it to be a problem. I'm sure he has his own ideas. Matt Prior must be a cert for the gloves for the First Test! Hopefully he'll not be afraid to make the difficult decisions he's sure to be confronted with. |

| Shame Bob Woolmer was bumped off! |

| Irrespective of whether he would coach England that was a shame. |

| Since 2005 when England won the Ashes, Fletcher has not had a settled team to work with. Look at the list of injuries since then. Vaughan Giles Flintoff Harmison Simon Jones Pietersen for a short while Trescothick That's over half the team. Mahmood - Plunkett - Panesar and Tremlett did their best, but had to much responsibility thrust on them to soon. Joyce - Cook and Bopara did their best on the batting front. These newbies did well in patches, but Cook or Joyce could not compensate for the loss of Trescothick. Mahmood and Anderson really took the brunt of the missing Harmison and Simon Jones, but could not be expected to match the Australians. Maybe it is time for Fletcher to move on - I believe that to be right for the one day side, but who will match him in the Test arena?. Rather than a change of coach - IMO England needed changes at the top, with the selectors Graveney and Miller going before Fletcher, it was they that selected the crocked Harmison - Giles and Trescothick, that's one of the main reasons England have done so poor. If anyone thinks that getting rid of Fletcher, but not making real changes to the team and the selectors, then IMO they are wrong. I have seen many England teams for the start of the first Test series put together on this forum, and to be honest most just look the same England side that has been thrashed, but with a little tinkering. The scheduals need looking at also - in 2006 England players India - Sri Lanka and Pakistan, both Test and one day series. Then came the ICCC Trophy - the England's tour of Australia, followed by this elongated World Cup, no wonder half the side look jaded. The England players have been touring close on 7 months, that IMO is ridiculous. I think another point worth remembering is that England have been a poor one day side for years, but England's showing in this Worls Cup has been the worst for years. And I for one don't believe that's just the fault of Dunkan Fletcher, England need a real clear out, and a seperate one day side that can go on and win competitions, rather than being perpetual also rans.

Credit where its due - Duncan turned a dismal test side into an Ashes-winning one. Sadly, he passed his sell-by date as a coach down under last year with his handling of Chris Read and selection of Giles ahead of Monty. I would add to that the insistance of Vaughan skippering the World Cup ODI side when he was clearly unable to hit a barn door never mind a cricket ball, but the responsibility for this particular howler should be shared between all three selectors. Whoever takes over as coach has it pretty easy on the test front, with an exciting crop of young players coming through in the next few years (Rashid, Broad, Compton and numerous others). What's needed is someone who can build a one day structure independant of the test side without a care as to who's nose gets put out of joint (the current captain being a prime example). Tom Moody would be an excellent choice - and probably top of David Morgan's shopping list - but the portents are he will take the Western Australia coaching position after the WC. |

| In the back of my mind was the idea of Graham Thorpe , who is coaching in Australia, as the England coach. if he has the badges and the skills why not? he has the international experience and he's English. He probably is too sensible to touch it with a barge pole. We'll probably end up with Graham Gooch or Mike Gatting, or even worse.....Ian Botham.. Why not just ask Shane Warne? He's in the country and we could do a lot worse! he may need the badges though. Peter Moores isn't a household name. But then nor was Duncan Fletcher and great players rarely make great coaches. Tom Moody could be a good choice and he'll be a potential world cup winner. A lot of teams will be looking for cricket coaches!
