Moores: Vaughan will be captain in the first test against WI

Well, this has just been reported on the BBC's Six O'Clock News on Radio 4. Don't England have any selectors any more?

For the test side, I'm not sure who else immediatly jumps out at you. Freddie as a no-no, struass needs a bit of form and vaughan, I reckon, will score heavily against WI.

The selectors are (as I understand it) charged with providing the captain with a team: the England captaincy is, I suspect, well beyond their remit. The England captaincy is a role that must surely be decided by the board... and with a lot more than just on-field performance as the criteria.

The ECB need an articulate frontman for their sport: Vaughan has served them well and looks eminently capable of serving them well for a long time to come.

I don't have a problem with Vaughan being named to the role - but I really would like to see the Coach stick to the job of providing the selectors with a squad, then the selectors picking a team from it. Whether the captain is appointed by the selectors, the board or the Queen is all the same to me, but it should not be the role of the coach to appoint anyone to the playing side in my view. That way lies the possibility of favouritism (cue Ern to bring up the perfectly valid example of Read and Jones) and the probability that the coach will be distracted from what should be his main job of preparing as strong a squad of players as possible.

I really do think the ECB could pick this one up from the Australians as a good idea, but that would involve admitting that good ideas can be had south of Dover, not something which the English often like to admit in any case and certainly not in cricket.

Vaughan is the captain of England. Graveney and Miller are still selectors and said that Vaughan will be captain for the West Indies series. When asked about this Moores said Vaughan will be captain for the 1st Test. Has he forgotten about the other two Tests? What the selectors havent' said is Vaughan is England's captain in both forms of the game. So it seems they are waiting for the Schofield Report first. Hussain doesn't think Vaughan should be playing in ODIs because he is not fit enough to play in both forms of the game. I think the people at the ECB know most of what is going to be in the report. There is one final meeting left before it is finalised.

The selectors made the wrong decision to pick Flintoff as captain for the Ashes instead of Strauss and after that everthing went downhill. I wish they would pick a squad first and then the coach picks his captain from the squad he is given.

Well I would lay money that if Moores was not appointed by the Queen, then it was Vaughan that got him appointed as coach - so quid pro quo, Vaughan is appointed as captain.
So this from OF was more than valid:-
