Tuffers was decent but wasn't as good a bowler as Monty as far as taking wickets was concerned.Tuffers was a defensive bowler who was better than Giles but Monty can do both roles of defence and attack just as well so is a far better option longterm.

As for comparing Monty to someone like Underwood,i can't as i never saw him bowl.I can however compare Monty to Edmonds,Giles and Tufnell who have basically been our other left arm spinners of the last 20 odd years and Monty to me is a superior bowler than the rest.Whether in time he ends up regarded as good as Underwood remains to be seen but he is the best orthodox spinner in an England shirt that i can remember.

I still think that Panesar would have been a better uncovered wicket bowler. I mean Underwood bowled even quicker again and he wasnt exactly renowned for being innefective on oncovered wickets.

What I would say though is that Tufnell would have been far more effective in the current team. For a start there is the better management and from a bowling point of view he would actually have large totals to bowl at instead of the usual "England have been bowled all out for 170", necessitating the defensive bowling.

What the hell has poor old "Monty Panesar" done wrong to be compared with hacks like Phil Tufnell and Ashley Giles.
Give your man some credit and stick to comparing him with deadly Derek at least, not the other "riff raff"

Tufnell was a very good bowler. However, finger spinners really do need something to defend and Tuffers was never given that chance in a poor England team. Monty's lucky in that sense.
