Players that should be included: Vikram Solanki: He is in fantastic form at the moment, really looking in good touch and should be batting up the order. Ryan Sidebottom: With the absence of Jon Lewis, still, he will be the ideal short-term stop gap till Lewis returns. And if he does well (and it will show if he can bat in other countries as all the pitches will be perfect for batting and a bowler's nightmare) then he might be able to retain his place. Alastair Cook: He made his first limited overs century for Essex against Surrey a couple of weeks back. He timed his innings perfectly and should be given a lengthy opportunity in the side. If Trescothick returns he would probably be dropped but given his current form this is a perfect opportunity to get some experience at international level. AND, most importantly, no bits and pieces all rounders who cannot claim to hold down a position in the side for one discipline. And that one discipline cannot be fielding!

| First on no account Jon Lewis, even Sidebottom is a better bowler than him. Assuming Trescothick is up for selection my team:- Trescothick Loye Pierersen Collingwood Flintoff (c) Bopara Nixon(+) Broad Mahmood Tremlett Panesar Reserves - Anderson - Plunkett - Prior.

| Are we all assuming tresco is just going to amble into the side and everything is going to be peachy ? Not so sure myself, I'd rather leave him the rest of the season to make sure - certainly at test level. Surprisingly, find myself agreeing with the solanki idea. He's in rude form at the moment and if that continues he's got to open up, possibly with cook (leave strauss for a bit). Bowling wise - pick the best of a rather dodgy lot - probably sidebottom in the mix too. Spinner ? Rather not have monty, I'm sure we can stick one in who can bat or field a bit better to tie an end dwon dalrymple maybe, blackwell if any form shown. One name of note, young trego from zummerzet. Taken a few wickets this year and occaisionally opens the batting in one dayers so knows which way the bat goes - and considering how wayward the bowling is - can he be any worse with the ball ?

| Panesar has the makings of an excellent ODI player: his batting and fielding are no longer an issue (he certainly bats better than Anderson) and his slow-medium bowling is ideal for ODIs (better, perhaps, than for Tests, where he could really do with being a lot slower). As a partner for Collingwood / Bopara / Vaughan and Pietersen (the 5th bowling options) he's great. I'd actually forgotten that Hoggard should be fit again: I'd make him first choice seamer (along with Flintoff and Sidebottom and ahead of the out of form Anderson). ps. What's Joyce done to upset people on the batting front? I appreciate that with Bell, Vaughan, Pietersen, Collingwood and Cook all available... he might have to settle for a spot in the squad of 15 and settle for being a 1st reserve... but he's proven himself a fine ODI batsman with a promising future and should certainly be involved ahead of Solanki, Trescothick, Loye, Yardy, benning and so on! | Hoggard playing ODIs? Why? His record isn't very good, whenever the pressure's on and batsmen go after him he bowls rubbish. Benning or Pettini are both useful and would add something to a very boring and unadventurous top order (unless Matt Prior opens). |

| I'd probably pick: Prior Trescothick/Cook Bell Pietersen Shah Collingwood Bopara Blackwell Broad Sidebottom Panesar We really need Jon Lewis back as a line-and-length bowler. Could Sidebottom do his job? And isn't Flintoff injured? Schofield - interesting idea and if he keeps up his form, possibly for the India series. He has been excellent for Surrey this season on one-dayers. An article on this, with a fairly interesting side - though with Solanki(!) as skipper

| The England A team will be announced at 1.00pm. I suppose it will give the selectors a look at a few players that they might be interested in for the one day side. 1 Benning 2 Carberry 3 Shah 4 Yardy 5 Bopara 6 Dalrymple 7 Gidman (c) 8 Davies 9 Broad 10 Onions 11 Kirtley I think Yardy and Dalrymple will be competing for a place. They won't try Ambrose or Mustard as keepers as Prior looks certain to be the ODI keeper. Probably two from Broad, Onions and Kirtley have a chance. |
