Graveney's Replacement?

Cricinfo - ECB advertises for selection posts

Probably too early to uncork the champagne as there's still the possibility of him reapplying and the halfwits at the ECB giving him the full time post but it looks like Mr Teflon himself will be out and a new man who hopefully will be less inclined to a) listen to Botham and b) continue "operation cripple Flintoff" will be in place.

Sadly it's probably easier to list the people you really don't want to have the role than the outstanding candidates for it.

Graveney has no dignity and should have resigned after the World Cup. His arrogance at the time was appalling. It's definitely time for fresh ideas.

David Blunkett could do better than Graveney.

Oh no! Gooch is interested in the selectors job. Please no! His captaincy and selection policy under the Stewart regime was among the darkest hours of English cricket.

We can just see the team now. Vaughan and KP dropped for being to flashy and Bell on a final warning and told to cut the shots out. All of a sudden Derek Pringle and Tim Munton will come out of retirement to lead the bowling attack. I take it Hoggard and even Sidebottom would also be dropped for being too quick.

Please No!

I thought Gooch was sacked the last time he was a selector.

He was, and the result of him (and Gatting) being selectors was England reaching the last spot in the rankings table.

Well given Gooch (currently ranked fourth on the list of people I really don't want to get the job) wants to continue with his coaching duties at Essex common sense (sadly not a word the ECB is familiar with) would dictate that he shouldn't be remotely considered for what is now thanks to the Schofield report a full-time position.

(pie chucker I'd wager that the 42 year old Munton would still be far more economical than Anderson )

Yikes... I'd got him in the top 2-3! No one has to be Botham: an idiot who should never be allowed to pollute the airways let alone be let near a responsible role. After him... Gooch probably comes a distant second... mostly because of his quite absurd (and lifelong) inability/unwillingness to see the other side of any argument: he never seems to have been even close to empathising with the mindsets of Gower, Tufnell and Ramps.... and I have no reason to think he'd be any better now. Would he have the patience to nurture Harmison? Would he care enough about the talent of Bell and Shah to rate them above Collingwood and Bopara? Would he be any better than the last lot at promoting talents like Piper and Read above journeymen like Stewart and Prior?

My preferred candidate would be Rod Marsh... but I don't see that happening. Of the rest... I'm not sure. Instinct says that making the job full time rules out most of the better candidates... but we shall see. Someone with Notts connections and an obsession with Read's maltreatment would be a start...
