Ok my team for tests only

Strauss
Smith
Vaughn
Thorpe
Rudolph
Kallis
Jones
Giles
Jones
Harmison
Ntini

Only real problem was selecting the all rounder, the reason i chose Kallis is the volume of runs he tends to score at home.

Well kirsty, I thought I had better give my team a South African dimention, as people may think I am biased , so I added a seasonal flavour with Rudolph .

I sent Strauss an e mail, and he understands his not being inlcuded, was not meant to be personal

Interesting punt on Hashim Amla (RSA): do you know anything much about him..or have any good reason to single him out above such players as Tresco and Rudoph?

Not really, friends of mine who saw him in the second Test against India liked his approach and style, he appeared to be a cool customer given that it was his debut. Has been the captain of Natal since he was 21, and has impressed with his approach.

I felt it was too predictable to go for the obvious choices; always good to take a punt or two, especially on a promising youngster. Amla is also the first player of Indian descent ever to play for SA and deserves a pat on the back for that I remember first hearing of him at the youth World Cup where he was captain, and was marked as one to watch.

I also considered dropping Hoggard in favour of De Bruyn, especially as the latter also scores some handy runs, and it would also have brought in a symmetrical 6-5 balance between the two countries, but felt one big punt was enough for one team

In any case, he is as likley to score runs in this series as some others, and probably not a bigger punt than going for Trescothick!

His older brother by four years, Ahmed, made his first-class debut two seasons before Hashim, but there is little doubt that the younger Amla is the better player. He is also a devout Muslim whose requests to have logos promoting alcohol removed from his playing gear have been successful so far. Amla toured New Zealand with the South African Under-19 team in 2000-01, he captained South Africa at the 2002 Under-19 World Cup, and he also starred for South Africa A. As sure as he possesses the most impressive beard in all the game, Amla is a candidate to become South Africa's first black Test captain. Telford Vice (October 2004)
