Dealing with 'Ghosters'

Recently I've noted an influx of players who join the board to play the fantasy game.Whilst I welcome new board members, I feel that I'd prefer active board members. However very few of the new members are going to post on the board, which leaves our community open to 'who the **** is that ' syndrome and people winning competitions who aren't active board members. (Ghosters, not posters) To avoid this I've posted new members who join a personal message (see below) and hoped that this encourages posting. I'm rather dubious as to whether this does affect posting , so now I'd like to open the debate to board members.

I'll give you some options.
1) The fantasy game is open to all . Any member can play.
2) Only members with with a certain number of posts can play.
3) Only members with a certain time of membership can play.
4) Only members with with a certain number of posts can play for free, otherwise they pay a fee.
5) Only members with a certain time of membership can play for free, otherwise they pay a fee.
6) Keep posting the PM but include a link to an interesting post (which can change) to stimulate interest
7) Stop sending the PM
8) Close the fantasy game. It's a victim of it's own success
9) Change the game (outline below)

Private message to new memebers (which I send every week to people who join the fantasy game)

Hello there! Welcome to World A Team. We are glad you've decided to join us. If you are joining primarily to play our fantasy cricket game, don't forget that World A Team is the home of quality cricketing (and other issues) debate. To be successful at Fantasy Cricket requires a good knowledge of cricket (and some luck). So please share your knowledge in our cricket discussions and let us get to know you. This helps build a community spirit, otherwise, the the board will fill up with strangers not talking to each other. Try to keep your debate on topic and on theme. The 'Members and Guest lounge' is designed for 'non cricket ' debates, the other forums we hope are self explanatory.

If you need any help or advice, don't hesitate to send me (or any mod) a private message , or leave a message on the 'members and guest board' or 'help and feedback' board. We hope you'll enjoy being part of the World-a-Team community.
This poll is public and multiple choices (sensible one's please) are allowed

I think the fee part will only detract members, although if it did work it'd provide a much needed boost for our donation drive.

I think the most sensible options are 2 and 6. I think ten posts is a good amount.

I voted for option 4 however on re-consideration I feel this is this is the correct option because if they have to pay or post, we will see loads of people free-posting just to get their post count up. I prefer posts with meaning rather than a few words answer jsut to get post count up

I'd agree with number 4 also. Only a certain number of meaningful posts should count.

Disagree with a set number of posts as it contributes to dribble. Post for post sake vs something of interest. My opinion is you either have it or you don't offer it as part of the whole system.

If you are going to charge then charge everyone, not just a select people to pay and another not pay. If the person is paying do they actually win something, if not why would they pay. If you can win something why should the person who is not paying any money have the same chance of wining something.

Using how long you are a member will not motivate people to post, all they will do is join and wait the period time then come back and enter.

I must mention that most of the time when I joined I did not post, I read the threads and knew what was going on but did not join in until I had an idea of what was what and who could take a comment and who could not. Then I started posting. If I Posted everything I thought my postings would be 4 or 5 times higher than what they are, but most of it would have been dribble or repeating what someone else has already said.

Realistically it comes down to what you want from the system;

1. People to post for discussion of cricket - I can not see any way to increase this.
2. To limit the amount of people in the fantasy games - set a quota system, x amount of places per game. Preference comes to first up first served at a set time to join the game (say a 2 day window to join) if you have more than the set number, then a preference system is set up - ie new people to the game have preference over ones who have had a game. Or any other system that the board feels as far.
3. Make money - charge everybody, people who pay you know are going to contribute.

Just my thoughts, waiting to be ripped apart

Option 6 is the 'first stop'. If it doesn't work, that will be the time to move on to the next stage, probably option 4.
