I'm not with this. What's this all about?

If you write a long post (so you're on the same page for a while without clicking on anything) you may get logged out and have to start again, which means your post you just spent 30 minutes writing and researching disappears with no way to recover it.

I am not sure what you mean: I write long posts at times, and have never been timed out.

What has Rachael. Ninjaman and Scott got to say on this - I wonder?.

When you log in you have the option of clicking "remember me": if you do this the problem (which results from you being logged out whilst writing your post) should not occur.

The timeout exists to ensure the "who's online" and "new posts" features work properly: if we set the timeout at 3 hours then you'll be seeing posts flagged as "new" when they are not and you will see people as "online" who disappeared long ago.

If you have any further problems then do let me know... but like Ern, I've had no problems with this (and have even left a half written post and completed it 24 hours later with no ill effects).

I've found that I am unable to reply unless I quote something from another post. I am continually told I do not have permission to post. I have also just been 'timed out' now when I took under a minute to make this post.

I have repeated it here including the 'quote' in case that makes a difference. It did!

This might be a "cookie" problem. If you delete your cookies and log back in the matter may be resolved:

1. Goto "Quick links" > "Check My Cookies" (on the top menu bar).

2. make sure all the tick boxes are ticked (the very top one should do all of the rest).

3. Click "Delete My Cookies".

If this is successful you should end up logged out: as you log back in please click "remember me".

I have this problem too, but only when using Firefox. Not just here but other vBulletin boards as well. Rachels's suggection of ticking "remember me" might well be the solution. Will try that next time.

But i suggest people get into the habit of highlighting and copying their entire post before clicking submit. I too lost an extensive post once because of this, never made the same mistake twice at least.......

It's also a good idea to delete all cookies from our respective computers if suffering a time out problem.

You can find this by clicking on "TOOLS", "Internet Options" and delete cookies.

With Vista click "TOOLS" at top of page, then "Internet Options", then "Delete Browsing History" - this will include all the cookies on the machine.

Sign back in, and like Rachael says - click on the "Remember Me" option to remain logged in.

This of course is with "Internet Explorer", not sure about other browsers.

For me it seems to be about 10 minutes, after I log in and spend a while writing the post I'm told that I have to log in again! And funnily enough, when I re-log in the post has actually been entered. It's not that big a deal, but it's just a little annoying having to log in twice.

Thanks for the advice, though- Seamer's suggestion seems like the most starightforward and practical, and I'll just do that if necessary.
