Mohammad Azharuddin

As a Derbyshire fan I have fond memories of this great batsman. He played 31 first class matches for us scoring 2728 runs (including 9 centuries and 11 half centuries) at an average of 54.56. He seemed to have such a good conversion rate of 50's to 100's - In tests 22 of his 43 50's were turned into 100's. I just wondered how he was remembered in India? I seem to remember there was some allegations of match fixing.

He would have been worshipped here if he hadnt been involved in all that match-fixing stuff. People seem to have forgotten him but I'm sure he still would be mobbed if he went outin public. I didnt know he had played for derbyshire...

Azhar

By far, the most stylish Indian batsman of all time.

Boy did he play for Derbyshire! It was when we were good. He played 2 seasons for us over a 3 year spell - either side of an Indian tour I believe. His record was fantastic and he is in my alltime Derbyshire XI that I posted in the domestic cricket (he is in the re-picked team when I dropped Holding)

He's still hoping that one day the match fixing allegations would be taken off and the BCCI would oblige him and let him play his 100th test...yes he is stranded on 99! He did play some classy shots and Laxman reminds me of him a lot.

Would he still get in the side or would it be a token gesture for a great servant? Was he still a current player when he was banned?

Slightly off subject, how many Indians have made 100 test appearances for India? I know England have 7 in the 'century club'. I was going to ask in all the nations threads but I will start here.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4199746.stmThis is sad, is this linked to the match fixing or has Azha got links with the criminal underworld? Does anyone know?

In India they usually go hand-in-hand.
