SG SUnny Tonny Bat

Hey guys,

Im from Australia and a mate of mine recently bought an SG back from India for me. I paid 180 Australian. Used it for the first time yesterday and in the third over the handle snapped and the bowler wasn't even that fast.

Is this a big problem in India, cos as i understand it is a pretty popular bat over there?

Jules.

Hard luck!

SG bats are the best you'll get in the subcontinent. I guess you got a defective piece. Never had any problem with SGs myself. Must have been a good friend of yours but its always better to select one's bat oneself.

Unfortunate for you my friend. I've just been to select a bat from a guy here in England who supplies only Asian bats, and knows his stuff about them.

I went looking for a BAS or Malik bat from him, and they looked very good too. However, he also said that SG and CA made by far the best bats, and that SG were actually making many bats for other manufacturers to be re-stickered. The bats he showed me were absolutely lovely, and a fraction of the price of english / Aussie bats.

It is possible that your friend was scammed into buying a nicely stickered SG bat that is actually a cheaper Kashmiri Willow product, which will not be of such good quality. It happens a lot with cabin crew who fly out to India and buy bats for mates from disreputable traders, and get palmed off with inferior quality, stickered up to look like the real thing.

If you've got any money left, my advice is to visit the Middlepeg website, which is an Australian site which really goes into detail about their bats, and currently offer CA bats which they rate very highly, and which are cheap too.

Hope this helps.

it is hard luck

i agree it was just bad luck. The bat itself is beautiful, nice thick edges and awsome bow. It was just the handle that snapped. I figure it was just a dud handle. I bought the bat for 180 Aus and can get the handle replaced for just 60. So at the end of the day im gettin and 3-4 hundred dollar bat for 240.

Sweet as!

oh ****

oh **** obviously your gonna be using it after you've knocked it in!!!!!!!!

Just out of interest, how long do you plan to knock it in for? And do you use a proper mallet or just a ball?

I used a wooden mallet and it was weird compared to using just a ball cos when i started doin the edges they were dinting! But the longer i did them the more they flattened out - does this mean im stuffing up my bat or that it is knocking in properly????

My 'Asian Blade' is basically an unstickered SG bat, made from English willow. It's about 2lb9 and beautifully balanced, and I had to get it after I buggered up my elbow using a monster 3lb2 Puma X-bow. I aim to spend about 3 hours in total knocking it in - probably in 30 minute bursts, which will basically be very boring!

I have always used a mallet to knock in my bats, as they work much better. I've never bothered too much with the edges, and would only really give them a gentle tapping anyway - so if you feel you've done enough, I'd concentrate on the face.

From what I understand, SG are one of the best Indian batmakers out there, but are unfortunately one of the least popular. I'm told that their quality is better than BAS, Sunridges, SS, AS or Malik & SA. I'm told that they actually make the unstickered Reebok bts, and also the Britannia sponsored bats you see some of the Asian boys use. I'm also told that they make bats for a lot of the smaller English brands, who then re-sticker them.

By all accounts, the Sunny Tonny is one of SG's best ever.

Anyone want to buy a hardly used Puma X-bow?

the edges

so have you ever experienced the edges dinting - i hope i haven't gone too hard on them. I was just a bit paranoid cos every bat i have ever owned has snapped along the edges!

Why do ya reckon concentrate on the face a bit more???????

To be clear with you do not get bats from india if you come from a other country they replace it with poor wood and yes people would do anything to get money. i suggest next time you go, you should get it from a popular shop thats my advise and pick the bat with good wood and everything and tell the owner you want the bat which you have pick because what they do is they will go back and switch your bat with a poor wood.
