It's off subject, and it's not necessary, Maranello, but I just can't resist mentioning Carl Hooper at this stage.

It is difficult to compare batsmen of current period with that of prior years simply because the game has changed so much, more so in the past 10 years then ever before.

Col C K Nayudu was considered as a great batsman of his time and unfortunately India started playing test cricket long after his best years were behind him. Although he did play in the inaugural test match in 1932, he was past his best by then. Before Nayudu there we Prof D B Deodhar and L P Jai who were considered top batsman, but who never got the chance to prove their talents.

Vijay Merchant was another batsman who could walk into any world 11 of that time.

With due respect, in my opinion, in full cry, Waugh would not come even close to Azhar. I have had the opportunity of watching both batsmen on a number of occasions and can comfortably say that Azhar in full cry was simply way above others.

Actually I've never seen Azhar in fully cry, so I can't really make much judgement. But Waugh did have a tendency to make his strokes so effortless.

I voted for Tendulkar because he is certainly the most naturally talented batsman that India ever produced, though Dravid scores over him in the intensity of application. If I was a selector and allowed to choose just one between the two of them, I would opt for Dravid for Tests but go for Tendulkar for ODIs.
