Greg Chappel resigns as coach

Australian batsman Greg Chappel has resigned as the coach of the Indian cricket team after it's first round exit in the World Cup.Greg Chappel's contract was due to get over after the World Cup and he submitted his report to the BCCI stating that he was not keen on continuing as the coach of India.

The favourites for the next coach are Sandeep Patil,Sunil Gavaskar,Dave Watmore and Tom Moody.

Hardly surprising. Considering the goings on in the Caribbean, Chappell is probably gald to be getting out with all his wits and bits still in place.

As to his replacement, I would be very surprised if Moody or Whatmore or any non-Indian would want to touch the job with a bargepole unless they put financial considerations over personal ones. As for Gavaskar, there must be easier ways of breaking up the national team than sending them around the bend. But Sandip Patil might be a good choice; he did a good job with Kenya a few years ago.

Because of India's early exit in the World Cup,nobody has bothered to look at the previous series and the test achievements.

I don't think that is the case. Despite the fiasco at this World Cup, most observers are aware that there is great potential talent in Indian cricket. But what most would prefer to steer clear of is the quagmire of red tape, politics and financial dilly-dallying that has become part of the game in India. If it was a straightforward desire to work hard and get better - as it seems to be with Sri Lanka - then there would be a queue of former players wanting to be Indian coaches. But the reality is unfortunately different.

The two statements by these people seem quite interesting, don't they.

I think Richards' statement has more than a bit of tongue in cheek in it. IMO, it would be kinder to let the entire Indian team loose in Iraq's war zone than get Gavaskar to manage them. They would have a better chance of survival with the former option.

Sunil Gavaskar as coach would just be a disaster. He is one of the seniors that myself and many others have very little respect for, he just doesn't know what to say when! Chappell resignation, although unfortunate, is probably the best thing for Indian cricket. They simply could not handle his style, whether the Indians are too soft or arrogant, I don't know.

Word has it that Ravi Shastri might coach the forthcoming Bangladesh tour, I don't have too many complaints about that as he looks capable of doing the job.

Ravi Shastri will be the manager, not the coach, the sources say.India will head for Bangladesh without a coach, say all the news channels.

Ravi Shastri is not a bad choice at a managerial level. He can be diplomatic when the need arises. I still think that Sandip Patil should be considered for the coaching role.

In any case, I hope that they keep Gavaskar at 10 arms length. Kermit the Frog would do a better job than him as India's coach.

The news around is that along with Ravi Shastri as the manager-cum-coach,Venkatesh Prasad would be the bowling coach along with Robin Singh as fielding coach.
