As much as I agree with you Rachael about speed, it was actually a servce from your favourite American (Roddick) that Agassi returned at the Stella at few years ago (and won the point).

It's also the case with Akhtar's first 100mph ball that Nick Knight innocuously played out to point in the world cup in 2003 that went unnoticed.

It was also interesting to note that Knight thought that Wasim hit the bat harder in that match despite bowling at 85mph.

I see someone asked about the 'speed gun' with reference to timing a fast bowler's speed - they have been timing fast bowlers since the 'thirties, I believe, when they used the cine cameras themselves to check the speed by counting the number of frames passing during the delivery. Not as accurate as nowadays, of course, but should still give a fair idea of speed nevertheless. In the 'seventies they used computer linked cameras, and I heard that Thomson was supposed to have got very near 100 mph...

Another thing that should be noted - many of the bowlers mentioned above are what I call 'occasional' speedsters, i.e. they only bowl a few deliveries at 90 or more - true fast bowlers use the very fast ball as their stock ball, and the slower ones are the 'surprise' deliveries.

Pity we won't be able to see him bowling again. He was banned for 5 years today.

Lee's control has been superb in the last 12 months (basically since McGrath left), his pace still very high too.

Steyn's also come good recently, albeit vs a poor NZ side and an out of touch India top order it seems..

Like that Jermaine Lawson who used to play for the Windies, 92mph 7-fer against the Aussies one minute, then reported for chucking, after remodelling he was lucky to reach 82 let alone 92 and got dropped.

Some bowlers can bowl two or three overs at express pace but how many bowlers have an average bowling speed of 90+. Only Akhtar and Lee.

That's the difference between a fast medium bowler and a genuinely fast bowler - a genuinely fast bowler's regular delivery is the 90mph kind; the fast medium bowler only occasionally delivers the very fast ball...
