| Any batsman that's had to play against both Murali and Warne (and McGrath) in the past fifteen years and still averages top figures is worth commending. Both Kallis and Lara join the Indians (Dravid and Tendulkar) there. Life for those Aussie and Sri Lankan batsmen will have been slightly easier! (especially Sangakarra and Jayawardene as the Sri Lankans seem to play Bangladesh so often!) |

| This has gotten way off track, got any sides?

| Well, Mark Richardson would certainly have to be one of the openers. The middle-order would have to include (going back a fair way) Charlie Macartney, one of the less well-known, but greatest, of all Australian batsmen. And there are two pace bowlers who would certainly have to be included- the ever-reliable Pedro Collins, and Damien Fleming. It's a crime that Fleming only played 20 Tests, because he had the figures of a bona fide great. |

| Off the top of my head... Mark Richardson Saeed Anwar Jaques Kallis Mohd Yousuf Shiv Chanderpaul Paul Collingwood Mark Boucher Daniel Vettori Chaminda Vaas Matthew Hoggard Corey Collymore Although some are far more notably recognised in the past 12-24 months (Hoggard, Shiv, Vettori), over their careers it hasn't been as much as team mates in my opinion. Same goes for most of those named, always overshadowed by 1 or 2. Anwar is a bit of a 50-50 but couldn't really think of many openers at this minute.

| 1. Mark Richardson 2. Mark Taylor 3. Younis Khan 4. Kim Hughes 5. Damien Martyn 6. Brian McMillan 7. Tim Zhoerer 8. Damien Fleming 9. Pedro Collins 10. Hugh Tayfield 11. Stuart MacGill Most of the names are pretty modern, but I think a lot of people tend to forget just how good people like Mark Taylor were. I've heard good things about Zhoerer's 'keeping, and although Kim Hughes was before my time, from what I've heard of him I'm sure he'd be one of the standout batsmen if he was playing today. Hugh Tayfield, the first South African spinner to take 100 wickets, is one of cricket's great spin bowlers, despite never getting mentioned in the same breath as Warne, Murali, Laker and co, and I'm sure he'd do well in tandem with MacGill, who spent his entire career to date in Warne's shadow. |
