England v New Zealand: 2nd Test: Old Trafford - 23 May 2008

The Second Test starts at 1100 BST on Friday and, inevitably perhaps, given Matthew Hoggard's injury, Chris Tremlett is called into England's squad, which is:

Michael Vaughan (capt), Alastair Cook, Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Tim Ambrose (wk), Stuart Broad, Ryan Sidebottom, Monty Panesar, James Anderson, Chris Tremlett.

No team news from New Zealand yet, as far as I can see.

Cricinfo report on Tremlett's call up here.

Please use this thread for pre-match and match comments.

How's the weather, someone? Showers forecast by the BBC, but I can find no news of what is actually happening. Toss due in eight minutes - are we likely to get a timely start?

OK - the answer is dry and sunny. England are unchanged from the first test; NZ have O'Brien in for Southee, who is unwell. New Zealand won the toss and will bat. Play starts at 1100 BST. Let's hope for a game which is less damaged by the weather than the one at Lord's last week.

Good to see Anderson back on form,4-0-23-0.Fantastic use of the new ball on your home ground. Why do we keep picking him?

Monty into the attack already, could be a good move as he has a fantastic record at Old Trafford.

36-0 off 10,New Zealand off to a flyer thanks to Jimmy.

The contrast with Sidebottom is great: 4-0-23-0 and 4-3-2-1

I loved this comment:
Quote:
1.6 Anderson to How, no run, drifting down the pads again, that was a fine ball to the left-hander but Jimmy, it's the right-handed Jamie here. That would have been a wide in a T20 but it's harmless here.

We have dragged it back quite well considering the New Zealanders were flying at 80-0 in the 24th over,to have them 92-2 after 29 is a bonus.Well done Sidebottom on the double breakthrough (he continues to impress at the top level) as it was needed.

Should be a good afternoon session with the game well balanced.

How gone,ct behind off Anderson 64.Good delivery, now why can't he bowl that line more often?

Good to see we have plans for certain players as Monty is straight into the attack against McCullum who struggled against him a little the other day.We all know when Oram comes in Sidebottom will be straight on too.

Got him,McCullum had a swish, hitting a 4 and a 6 then a couple of balls later he edged one and Collingwood took a good catch on the rebound off Ambrose gloves.123-4.

He has bowled some decent deliveries including well directed bouncers at 88mph, Panesar has also come back after being attacked before lunch,

Not a great weather forcast for this match:::BBC - Weather Centre - 5 Day Forecast in Celsius for Manchester International, United Kingdom

His first spell was abysmal, after lunch he has bowled well and has gained 5mph.Now i know he is bowling at a different end now but surely on his home ground he should know which end suits him best.

Anderson seems to be on fire here, he's knocked Flynn's tooth out and has Oram hopping around every ball, whilst Taylor's taking him on and either scoring boundaries or edging. Quality-sounding cricket (at uni, and I don't have Sky - are there highlights on tonight?), I love quality quick (English, that is) bowling .
