Vaughan's future.

I am now convinced Vaughan should be dropped as captain. He has done a excellent job at times but now public and player support is going. He should keep his place in the side.
How about bringing Key in as capitain. Smith was brought in as SA capitain from nowhere.

Well the cheeky guy that you are John, I expected a thread like this from ya.
I think the whole issue of his indifferent form has snowballed into questions on his team selection and captaincy with the side losing to good teams. Honestly I think he was unfortunate to have got out to a very good catch when he was starting to look good but I dont think people will offer him that concession.

Few teams will be able to take such outrageous decisions like the one SA did when they brought in Smith
!!!, I dont think Key, a rank outsider will be given the captaincy. I think Strauss maybe the man and they need to search for a solid number 3 if Vaughan goes. I am always a firm advocate of the principle that a captain is always as good as his team and had England won the match we would hardly be discussing Vaughan's fate, but unfortunately he ended up in the losing side and the selectors and public might have lost faith in him.

Don't forget I have been living in England for 30 years. So I am well up on their debates. The wind is blowing against Vaughan you can't lose a home series to the bad boys from SA.
Someones got to carry the can and it is the captain. Vaughan's future lies elsewhere he is old school as they say in England and will take responbility.

I have heard good reports about Robert Key's captaincy. Strauss forget it he will alwalys be in Vaughan's shadow.

I'll answer the original post question first.

Vaughan does not have a future in the England side as a player or a skipper.
He should announce his international retirement immediately and save the embarresment of being sacked.
If he does not retire I would if a selector sack him prior to the final test.

The new captain of England should be Kevin Peitersen, because everyone is facinated about how he will go in the job.
It will only be a distraction to Bell, Strauss or Collingwood if they get the captains job ahead of Peitersen, because everyone time the team hits a slight bit of trouble, the media and the fans will go into hysterics wondering how Peitersen would have done things differently.

Time to be bold, suck it and see, and get the burning can Kevin Peitersen captain England question answered sooner rather than later.

Next test against South Africa would be a great place to start.

If we are going to make the change we should do it now but i can't see it happening. If Vaughan is stripped of the captaincy that is his international career over as he has not scored enough runs to justify a place in the side.

The problem is that Collingwood who 2 days ago was on the verge of being dropped will probably be the new skipper.Funny old world isn't it.

Vaughan has lost this series and he should remain in charge until the Oval test is over. There is no point putting in a new captain on a losing cause. After the Oval test, Vaughan should stand down as captain (and I think he will). He should then be "rested" from the side (a selectors' decision and one which they must take). Back to county cricket for the first half of next year, and perhaps a recall to face Australia if he has regained some batting form by then. It's the only way forward that I can see.

I am a big fan of Michael Vaughan and I think he has done some great stuff for England - but the time comes for everyone to move over, and for Michael Vaughan, I'm afraid the time is at the end of this series.

Incidentally, John: I'm not a UK resident any more, but I've never thought of the South Africans as the "bad boys". World cricket has benefited enormously since they came back into the fold, and they've given England a good series this summer - and won deservedly. So, good for them, and I'm glad that the next series will be a five test series. Hopefully I might get down to the Newlands test.

And the new captain? For me, Andrew Strauss or Kevin Pietersen (the latter, if captaincy calms down the occasional rushes of blood which he gets, would be very good news).

I guess Vaughan has decided his future and called for a press conference.

Well it won't be Colly as he has resigned too.

All points to a showdown between KP and Bell seeing as they are the only players who are secure for both forms of the game.
