Last one of the official round of voting and possibly the hardest. Lots to pick from.

Joel Garner (West Indies)
Glenn McGrath (Australia)
Dennis Lillee (Australia)
Wasim Akram (Pakistan)

We are looking for 2 in the final team but I have made the poll a multiple choice. Therefore feel free to pick 3 or 4 or ....

I think it's difficult since there's only one spot* available, and around 6 or 7 equally suitable candidates.

* I assume no one sane is going to leave out Marshall.

PS: I voted for Holding, Hadlee, Wasim and Waqar as my second choice - would be happy for any of those four to partner Marshall, Imran, Warne and Murali. Having said that, I could just as viably go for Ambrose, Lillee or McGrath to partner Marshall, and the attack would be just as strong - it all comes down to subjective like/dislike.

Some statistical analysis on the players since 1980. I have deliberately not mentioned batting although Hadlee, Marshall and Wasim may be superior batsmen. I think with the top 6 in this team we can pick the best bowlers rather than taking batting into account.

Malcolm Marshall 78 tests - 373 wickets at 20.40
Curtly Ambrose 98 tests - 405 wickets at 20.99
Courtney Walsh 132 tests - 519 wickets at 24.44
Michael Holding 45 tests - 184 wickets at 23.38
Joel Garner 49 tests - 210 wickets at 20.62
Glenn McGrath 124 tests - 563 wickets at 21.64
Dennis Lillee 35 tests - 171 wickets at 24.07
Wasim Akram 104 tests - 414 wickets at 23.62
Waqar Younis 87 tests - 373 wickets at 23.56
Allan Donald 72 tests - 330 wickets at 22.25
Richard Hadlee 60 tests - 324 wickets at 19.70

I went for (in no particular order)

Marshall (raw hostility)
Ambrose (hostility matched with the ability to bowl long cheap spells of pressure)
Wasim (swing)
Hadlee (surely the most perfect bowler?)

I went for Marshall, Ambrose, Lillee and Hadlee. But I think that even though the vote was for two spinners, if we select a 12th man he should be a fast bowler on the basis that he can at least be called up for more favourable seam conditions- and at any rate would certainly be a greater bowler than Kumble, Qadir or Underwood.

Aurelius you took the words out of my mouth. Anyway I went for Marshall, Holding and Akram(for swing). I think the 'White Lightening' is the guy on this list who underperformed the least to his potential. I wonder if he was unfortunate being born in South Africa during the apartheid era and maybe would've achieved a lot more being in an Australian side. Any side would've loved to have him bowling full throttle in his peak years, unfortunately he hasn't done enough to warrant a selection to this team.

Another mitigating factor in Donald's favour is the fact that he was overbowled throughout his career, meaning that he was injured and less effective during his last couple of years which had a bit if a drag on his career figures. Still, if he underachieved then he's even more remarkeable- to average just 22 is impresssive enough, but of all the bowlers who've taken at least 200 wickets, only one (Marshall) has bettered his strike rate of 47.

If it had have been 1970's onwards Dennis Lillee would have been my first pick, but because it was 1980's onwards I didn't pick him.
