I did not have the pleasure of seeing the liked of Quadir, Bedi, Grimmet ect, so i can only vote on the ones i saw. Warne is my choice because of the sheer beauty of his action. Murali, his action aside, has single handedly won many tests for Sri-Lanka, but mainly on tailormade wickets at home and has struggled outside Sri-Lanka. But his record is still remarkable so i put him at number two.

Gone for Warnie over Murali and a distant third to a huge gap.

Gone for Warne for the reason he is a more consistant bowler than murali. In saying that he has gone for over a 100 less times than what Murali has. On the number of wickets he has taken, Warne has had to share them with the best bowler for over a decade in McGrath. Murali is Sri Lanka's bowling attack.

its unfortunate that Stuart MacGill is behind Warne.....if he were from another era he would be bowling and getting wickets for Australia in a similar vein to Warne.......its also a testament to Warne to keep a guy who would not look out of place in these lists.....out completely

There are so many great bowlers from the past but you can only vote on what you have seen with your own eyes so the list is down to Warne,Murali and Emburey (only joking). For me it has to be Warne because the pitches Murali plays on are specially set up for him,Warne's aren't.

Warne for me too. Murali is fantastic, but because of doubts about his action, and the possibility that he's not quite as strong away from home, he's down the list.

I've read that Clarrie Grimmet, Tiger O'reilly and Bedi were all pretty special, but I think that they were assisted by covered pitches. Also they didn't have to compete with heavy bats, smaller grounds, better fielding and opponent access to video analysis of their bowling.

All of this, and the fact that the sheer weight of One-day cricket hasn't dulled their effectiveness points to Warne and Murali for me.

By the way, is Saqlain Mustaq - for many of our generation, the pioneer of doosra bowling - the forgotten spinner in world cricket?

In terms of the classical leg spinner, Mushtaq Ahmed must certainly slot in behind Warne in terms of the 90s/00s.

Murali and Warne have, more or less, equivalent strike rates, economy rates and averages away from home.

If he has struggled then so has Warne and I wouldn't lay that claim at Warne's feet anyday.

What you can say is, in comparison to what he has done at home, Murali's away efforts are below par.

Shane Warne, by a street and a half. 585 test wickets is enough to say to me that he is the best. And he's never been under scrutiny whilst bowling.

Ninjaman, explain your choice of Lance Gibbs please.

Best Spinner

Have to be Bill O'reilly of Australia. Played in the same era as Verity and was an integral part of Bradman's team.

Deffently Muralitharan. He has nearly as many wickets as Warne but he as played alot fewer tests. I have never respected Warne as a bowler or as a person. Warne gets most of his wickets from tail enders and i have lost count of the amount of times every bowler has bowled well except for Warne. Also the few matches where MacGill and Warne both played, MacGill won in wickets nearly every time.

Whereas Muralitharan is Sri Lanka main bowler. He gets most of their wickets and the team would belost without him. Could you say the same about Warne, i think not. I wont miss him when he retires and i think MacGill will do a better job in Warnes place.
