Yorker,

You're right. A good spinner needs to have some grey matter! Outsmarting a batsman is one of the basic requirements for spinners, I think. Or else he'll just "place" the ball anf hope for the best

You say in England you are losing the art of spin....Well, my good man, South Africa has already completely lost it. And with the current crop playing at provincial level, there's actually only one or two worth mentioning. Sad really, because spin bowling is one of the things I love to watch most at test level.

Anyway, your ideas about a certain amount of overs having to be bowled at test level seems like a good one...although there are some wrinkles to be ironed out...It will certainly encourage spinners coming through at an earlier level. And test playing countries will have "spinner camps" as much as they're having "fast bowler camps".

But, in what way do you think the captains should be able to appeal to a third umpire? Or when do they appeal? After 20 overs....30...40? Can they appeal before the match, when the team is announced and they don't see a spinner? Or can the opposition captain then say :"HEy, we have a spinner, our batsman who comes in at no 4 can actually turn his arm over...so that makes him a spinner!"

BTW...I saw a little bit of Underwood. Not bad at all. But England will not have a picnic in Pakistan. If all the rumours are true, we will be in for some turning tracks, and England's spinning cupboard is a little bare...Don't you think?

Not really. Giles was the top wicket taker in Pakistan last time around (17 wickets at 24) and was great, more recently, in Sri Lanka... pretty much carrying England single-handedly (he took 18 wickets in 5 innings, starting with a 1st innigns 4-for that included Jayasuria, Jayawardene and Tillakaratne, followed by a 1st innings 5-for that included Jayasuria, Tillakaratne and Samaraweera and as he also picked up Attapattu, Sangakkara and Dilshan at one time or another... he was doing SOMETHING right!).

The following winter, and nursing a persistent Achilles injury, he hobbled back and forth from the middle to the physio's ice bucket, while returning Test-best figures of 5 for 67 at Ahmedabad. And, two years later, after remodelling his action and enduring a dismal tour to Bangladesh, he burst back to form in Sri Lanka, with 18 wickets in the series and a magnificent matchsaving stand in the first Test at Galle.
Udal might not be "one for the future" but he's also a good bowler... and by all accounts he's developed massively this year under Warne at Hampshire: his "slider" comes from Jenner.... and he wreaked havoc on the county scene in the latter part of the year. Am really surprised to see the names of Chandrashekhar missing from the list. I consider him nothing less than shane warne. Also I think the name of Prassana should be there.

Shane Warne brings more than just his bowling to the crease. Although Murali ain't far behind.

I voted for Shane Warne its not just the way he bowl and pumps the team up, it is they way he acts on the field and the way he talks in the media before a series to get under the skins of the oppositon and 99% of the time he backs up what he says. The reason Warne has been so successful is firstly his accuracy and his abilities to do almost anything with the ball as if it is on a string, but the one thing that everyone misses as his use of the crease one ball the will bowl the ball as far away from the stumps and possible then the will bowl as close to the stumps as Glenn McGrath, which allows him have the ball coming from different angles without it being really obvious, sometimes he will only move a couple of inches which can keep the batsman guessing. The use of the crease is the difference between Warne and any other spinners in the world.
