I don't know about that. True, he doesn't turn it much but with the extra air he is giving his deliveries post-injury I saw him produce more turn at the Gabba than ever before, aside from the ball out of the rough vs Martyn last summer. Incidentally Martyn got a turner this time which forced the edge to Colingwood, which encouraged me about Ashley Giles Mk.2. That said, he will never turn it as much as Monty and the two play slightly different roles as bowlers which can possibly justify both of them playing. I'd certainly expect both to go for far fewer runs than Anderson, and for Monty to take more wickets. I was in favour of Anderson before but he seems to have returned to the habit of bowling too many short, wide deliveries or overpitching after a tight spell - I'd probably have him back in on pitches not suiting the spinners, but at Adelaide I'm open to both Gilo and Monty playing.

That's good......yes, the ball turned but it was simply a poorly executed shot. He'd played the same shot to a very similar ball in the previous Giles over. The ball didn't get Damien Martyn out, Damien Martyn did.

That's being more than a little disingenuous to Giles. He pitched it on a very good length in the right line outside off stump, and moved it away from Martyn - Martyn had to play that and yes, he played it poorly but the ball was bowled very well and deserved a wicket.

Sample propaganda from The Australian this morning: headline "Vaughan Duck Adds To England Woes". I'd certainly be more worried if there was the slightest chance of him playing, but he's not even in the state. Someone should point this out to The Australian's correspondent!

By no means is this a slur on you, but that is a typical England approach, which is taken by all your sporting teams.

One notable exception was deciding to bugger off Thorpey for Pietersen. You could've relied on Thorpe for honest performances, but KP, there were risks, but you could reap the rewards. And you did. And there was similar opposition.

Take Giles out of the equation, put Monty in. Trust me, you could be on to something KP-esque.

So the Aussies are waiting till the last minute to decide whether McGrath plays.Hope he fails the fitness test as we wouldn't want him limping out halfway through the game would we.

Sorry Paoli, but you're really going to have to qualify that one. For me a ball that deserves a wicket has a chance of getting one and usually does, much like a ripping legbreak from your boy normally does, and that has been valid in cricket from day one...how is it that bowling balls in good areas is seen as mediocre? I can't see how my observation suddenly equates to some perceived notion that the English are a bunch of noble "chaps" who don't have the desire to win?

The generalisation is also wrong, and if we had a decent coaching setup in rugby at the moment we'd still be demonstrating that by retaining the world cup we wrested from your hands three years ago when the world cup is played.

Just in case you thought, despite all my posts to the contrary of late, that I am somehow arguing for Giles over Panesar. I am not. I simply recognise good bowling when I see it.

Key for today is the toss. If England can win it and bat, and if McGrath doesn't make it onto the field we could sneak a much needed win

The only change Australia look likely to make will be if McGrath is unfit, in which case I expect the see Johnson line up in a very inexperienced Test attack. Could play into England's hands.

I am guessing that two spinners will be the way England go (particularly if the toss goes in their favour) and that will mean Monty replacing Jimmy. If they do go with just one spinner, I get the feeling Giles did just enough (with the bat) to mean he is ahead of Monty.
