If you want to pick players in this team why would anyone choose Panesar over MacGill?
MacGill is a class above him.
If he lived in another country or was born in a different era he would be considered a star.(Or if we had a good all-rounder)

S.MacGill: 40 tests.198 wickets at 27.21. 51.58 S/R (which is great for a quick but awesome for a spinner.Warne 57.68, Muratitharan 54.86)

Does anyone think Panesar will ever get close to any of these numbers except for the total wickets(maybe)& tests?

If Flintoff is competing with Lee, you also have to consider Lee has batted the pants off him.

Of course Flintoff has bowled the pants off Lee in fairness...

Firstly I’m not even going to say what everyone else has jumped on like a rabbit during mating season, secondly McGrath has taken 9 wickets at 25.00, and the only English bowler to take more wickets is Hoggard with 10 at 27.90.

Mahmood would get annihilated in Australia he does not bowl a good enough line and length and does not really move the ball enough.

I remember watching Clark for Middlesex a few years back. He looked distinctly average. Based on this series, I couldn't have been more wrong. He's bowling as well (and I have to check myself before saying this)... he's bowling as well as Glenn McGrath was at the same age.

After 3 games it would have to be

Cook/Langer
Hussey
Ponting
Collingwood
Pietersen
Clarke
Gilchrist
Warne
Hoggard
Clark
McGrath

The bowling is easier to pick than the batting and it may surprise a few England fans that Flintoff is nowhere near the side but in truth he hasn't played well enough.

Clarke has scored 373 runs at 124.33: there's no way he's out of a combined XI! Pietersen's 398 runs at 79.6 guarantee him a spot though... and Ponting's 524 runs at 104.8 and Hussey's 415 at 138.33 do the same for them.

Langer, Collingwood, Cook and Bell have all made cases to join this quartet...

In short.. the top order HAS to read something like this:

Hussey
Langer / Cook
Ponting
Clarke
Pietersen
Bell / Collingwood

Gilchrist presumably gets in at 7... though neither 'keeper has been flawless behind the pegs... leaving four bowling spots: Clark guarantees one spot... McGrath and Hoggard are clearly ahead as the second and third seamer... and Warne surely nails the final spot.

So the remainder of the combined XI would currently read as follows:

Gilchrist
Warne
Hoggard
Clark
McGrath

So.. with two games to go we've a little way to go in terms of finalising the XI... but 9 of the Xi are looking pretty certain!

Edit: hadn't seen Greg's post.. but pretty much agree (though I'd suggets Bell's classy displays eclipse Collingwood's gritty scoring
