Ashes pluses and minuses...

Just looking at the nine days plays so far, who have been the hits and misses? The surprise packages, and the over-hyped disappointments? My tuppence worth....

Pluses - Aussie

Ricky Ponting - His captaincy may still be more reactive than proactive, but you cannot argue with the wonderful quality of his batting. An avalanche of quality runs, and leading from the front when he has the willow in his hand.

Hussey - Supported his captain marvellously, but will be disappointed not to get a hundred

Clarke - two good innningsd and should have cemented his place

Clark - Most consistent bowler on either of the teams so far, which is a major surprise to the casual observer.

England

Paul Collingwood - over 300 runs after three innings is more than anyone would have expected. Absolutely first class.

Pietersen - Has aussie running scared

Minuses - Aussie

Hayden and Martyn - neither has contributed with the bat yet

Lee - Wayward as ever.

England

Anderson - Not providing any real threat of taking wickets

Giles?? - Performed with bat, nothing with ball, and a disappointing dropped catch...

Topper you missed Hoggard as a plus for England, after a slow start due to not being ready he has bowled superbly in this game.

Agree about Hoggard in this game. Barring 5th day miracles he must be MOM.

For comparison... I've just looked up the record of two other spinners in Australia... and added Giles' figures from this Test to his previous stats.

Anyone like to speculate (without resort to cricinfo) as to which one is Giles.. and as to who the other bods might be?

I will just do Australia because we are in the minority here.

PLUSES

2 nil up

Langer: proving his critics wrong(as he always seems to do)
Ponting: keeping up his awesome form with the bat & improving with the captaincy
Hussey: solid & reliable as usual (If he was picked instead of Katich in 2005 we would have probably won)
Gilchrist: looks like he is back in form
M.Clarke: has tightened his game up & now is safe in the team.
S.Clark: best of our bowlers so far with superb control
Warne: he is still a legend

MINUSES

The tight schedule may wear us down

Hayden:done very little with the bat, awful shoot to Hoggard in the 1 inn,2 test(some good sharp catches though)
Martin: on the slide, should get dropped
Lee: still not convincing, looses his line & length to often & will need to perform well at the WACA
McGrath: looking tired (9 day rest should help with that)

Martyn will be dropped when Watson comes back in, im not worried about Hayden he will fire. He has had a good year with the bat and will get some runs.

Lee bowled well in the second innings showing a good amount of reverse swing. Conditions have not suiting him.
Anderson does not look up to scratch in the test arena yet, Giles has to go he has been horrible, Harmison has to go he has been the worst.

Who will be the Gillespie it is between two bowlers at the moment. Anderson can't be counted because he is young and has never been a test standard bowler, you can't go down hill from the bottom of the hill.

Bad bowling statistics so far this series

Lee - 5 wickets at 64.60
Harmison - 1 wicket at 288.00
Anderson - 2 wickets at 151.50
Giles - 3 wickets at 87.33
