The Independent reported that Vaughan was likely to line up for England in their two-day tour match against Western Australia at the WACA this weekend. Vaughan had been expected to play for Bayswater-Morley in Perth grade cricket on the weekend but the club's coach David Baird told the paper otherwise. "I was told he would not be playing for us because he would probably be playing for England," Baird told the newspaper.

Vaughan has been ruled out of Friday's festival match at Lilac Hill as a precaution, because it was feared that four days of cricket in five would be too much of a strain on his knee at this stage of his recuperation.

Crazy.More mixed signals to the England squad. Is he going to captain the side as well?

Is Fletcher being paid by Australia to ruin our chances?

Why go with Jones and Giles?

So many questions and no proper answers.

this is unbelievable, Fletcher once again goes for an unfit member of the 2005 squad.

I've created seperate threads for the obvious two talking points: Anderson / Harmison and Read / Jones... but today's England batting does, at first glance, also look encouraging for Cook, Strauss and Joyce...

Code:
 England XI 1st innings R	M	B	4s	6s	SR
AJ Strauss	b Heal 88	171	110	12	0	80.00
AN Cook retired out 106	215	171	14	0	61.98
GO Jones	c North b Heal 0	1	1	0	0	0.00
EC Joyce	c Marsh b Macdonald	73	109	97	9	0	75.25
CMW Read	not out 59	129	107	5	2	55.14
AF Giles	c Rogers b Edmondson	4	22	15	0	0	26.66
SI Mahmood	not out 20	33	30	3	1	66.66
	Extras	(b 2, lb 1, nb 3)	6

	    Total	(5 wickets; 88 overs)	356
For the Aussies... Steve Magoffin got through his overs very cheaply.... but the only bowler to emerge with a decent return was Heal.

Heal is a SLA, so theres no excuse not to play Monty on that pitch.

Yes pity Strauss did not do the same at Adelaide, how could England accomodate Joyce - who makes way?.

Also of note is Mahmood's CONTINUED good form with the bat - give him a decent pitch to bowl on, and England have a budding all- rounder.

If Fletcher goes on his current form (balls about batting depth) then Mahmood should be picked ahead of Harmison simply because his bowling can't be much worse (although soimetimes it is) and his batting's better.

After all, Fletcher needs bowlers who can bat better than they bowl, or so he seems to want.
Ditto with wicketkeepers. Wicketkeeping ability is not a essential requirement, so why should bowling be?
