In truth the one thing Australia don't have is a true all-rounder, and in symonds 'they put their hopes'. had that not been the cae with an average near 20, he would not IMO have been playing in this 4th Test.
I think without doubt he is safe for at least a year, he did what the selectors wanted, but look at the begining of his innings, he IMO is not a Test player, he came off on the night.

Symonds only got to play because Watson was injured.
Watson will get his chance when Symonds fails because the Australian seletors are obsessed with finding the Australian version of Flintoff.
If Watson was fit he would have taken M.Clarkes spot for the first two tests and done stuff-all IMO.
