An average of 40+ in any form of cricket could be classified as 'good' KennyG, so I really don't know what you're talking about.

With the way cricket is today an average in the low 40s in not so good at first class level.
Low 40s does not mean you should get a slot in the Australian team.

P.Jaques 56
B.Hodge 48
S.Katich 50
D.Hussey 50
S.Watson 49 (all-rounder)
B.Haddon 38 (wk)

Certain players get picked for their potential and because of selectors playing favourites.
M.Clarke first class average was in the thirtys when he got picked for his first test.
Symonds had a batting average of 19 and a bowling average of 45 in test when he got reselected for Adeliade.
Brad Hodge got dropped after 5 tests with an average of 58.

My main point was that the Australian selectors don't always go for the player with the best figures.
White should have got picked for Melbourne and Sydney because it would have given him some experiance and the series was already won.
