Pollock gets smacked to the boundary. He does look like he's struggling a bit.

And that is EXACTLY what the SAfrican fans are afraid of...If Inzi goes big, he really goes BIG!

It's the pitch. No assistance at all...NOT what SA wanted from the groundsman.

that's the hundred up for the loss of two wickets....

I think the momentum has swung back Pakistan's way. It does sound from what you guys are saying that Pakistan should be aiming for a good first innings score. What would that be on this pitch? 450 or 500?

Harris is on now, at least when he's bowling he's less like to drop a catch

The run-rate is 2.7, slow going....

Sort of like parts of the India-South Africa series.

Is this the same match that is being written about in the cricinfo bulletin where I just read the following:

The pair's unbeaten stand of 65 at the drinks break was all the more impressive given the helpful bowling conditions, on a pitch offering considerable movement to South Africa's seamers.

Shaun Pollock, in particular, was at times unplayable. Bowling a tight line just outside off stump, he produced several beautiful away cutters to beat the outside edge and gained surprising bounce off a good length. And though Yasir and Younis fished and missed, they showed excellent resolve to keep the scoreboard ticking over with well-placed singles and the occasional tension-relieving boundary.
I've been out and am playing catch-up.. but the apparent contradiction between your post and this bulletin leaves me wondering what on earth is happening...

I can't help with that, Rachael, since I'm not seeing any pictures, and following cricinfo, like you. Damned work!

Good half-centuries by Younis and Hameed. 157-2 is a good score for Pakistan on a batsman's wicket, but if it's assisting the bowlers, it's a great score!

Well.. the opening spell of 7-3-7-0 tells a story... but get a load of this:
Quote:
32.6 Pollock to Yasir Hameed, no run, beaten! Pollock's patience almost rewards him. Again full in length, much closer to the off stump, and Yasir is beaten while lunging forward in defence

34.3 Pollock to Younis Khan, no run, beaten! Again Pollock continues to tease the batsman outside the off stump. Just rolls his fingers across the seam and it lands on a length and shapes away. Younis lunges forward to defend and is beaten.

36.3 Pollock to Younis Khan, no run, straigthens after landing outside off, steered to point

36.4 Pollock to Younis Khan, no run, Hello?! snorter! Suddenly Pollock hurls in beast of a delivery. Kicks from short of length and it hurtles towards the throat of Younis who hops, some how gets his wrists working overtime and manages to fend it in front of him. Very well handled.

38.3 Pollock to Yasir Hameed, no run, again short of length, on the off stump line, comes back in a touch, defended off the front foot.
Sounds to me like there's just enough encouragement for the seamers even after nearly 40 overs.... sounds like great cricket!!!

Well Rachael, I do not know who wrote that report, but my guess is that it was Stevie Wonder. I have been following every over on cricinfo and if what the bulletin says is correct, then we would have seen the ball beat the bat every over and we would have seen lots of runs through the slip/gully region. This has not been the case. Pollock was using cutters to beat the bat, not seam movement. While SA have been bowling a bit too short, I would not say that there is no assistance and I will also not say that there is plenty of assistance. As with every pitch (including flat ones) there usually is something in it for the bowlers in the first session. We have now seen Pakistan push the run rate up after the lunch session which indicates to me that While the Pakistan batsman are playing well, the pitch is playing well ( batting wise) too.

Thanks for that Gibbs-Fan... though in fairness to Stevie Wonder... the bulletin made no mention of seam movement and just talked of Pollock bowling "several beautiful away cutters to beat the outside edge" and of how he "gained surprising bounce off a good length".

At least Pollock's able to get enough bit for his cutters to deviate: you can't even rely on that these days!

I trust you are enjoying the match....
