The criteria did change to assess international cricket in the early part of the decade. This was reflected the year that Shaun Pollock won in 2003 without coming to England in the year. Since the ICC Cricketer of the year award, this has now reverted back to primarily the English season.

Clearly Yousuf must win. Ramprakash will probably get a nod (just as Adams did in 2004). Mushtaq Ahmed's won it before in 1997. Cook and Panesar look pretty likely winners. Hussey should have won it before, so I think they should make an exception to his apparent ineligibility.

Bell
Cook
Monty
Ramprakash
Jayawardene

Jayawardene scored a fantastic 100 to save the Lord's Test; he also played very well in the ODis, won 5-0 by Sri Lanka.

Yousuf, obviously, was outstanding; but I doubt he'll be one as he's such a cert for the Leading Cricketer and I suspect they won't give him two awards.

The obvious candidates are:

Stuart Clark (surely?)
Alistair Cook
Mohammad Yousef
Younis Khan

Panesar.....MMM not sure a about that. I forget can you only win WCOTY once?

Just the once, that's right. I'd say Monty's probably a dead cert though!

I can't remember who has been a winner previously but Alistair Cook and Monty Panesar will probably be chosen this time and if he hasn't been before then Ramps should be.Other than that any number of foreign players could get the accolade.

The five cricketers honoured have been revealed in Wisden '07 (out today) as:

P.D. Collingwood
D.P.M.D. Jayawardene
Mohammad Yousef
M.S. Panesar
M.R. Ramprakash

While the Leading Cricketer in the World award went to Andrew Flintoff.

Bit of a surprise there, I don't think any of us particularly backed Jayawardene to get picked but that's life I suppose. He has had a great career and featured in that 600+ run partnership with Sangakkara against South Africa, so I guess it isn't that surprising really.

Edit: Sorry Milo, must've missed your post there...

ahem...Adam...the second reply in this thread...by some chap called "maranello" (), did raise Jayawardene as a worthy candidate. His inclusion is not a surprise, and is not primarily due to the 600 run partnership against weak bowling on a SSC flat track. He is there for his performances in the English summer. What performances? Well, he only played the best innings of the season, at Lord's!
