Actually, that is not as silly as it sounds. DK seems to have maturity beyond his years, but given our heirarchial system, he is a long way away from even being considered for captaincy. But I think that he might get there with experience. If you exclude Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh - neither of whom are suitable candidates - you are down to inexperienced junior players after the "Big 4" retire.

What of dhoni he is a keeper so he understands the wicket, he looks mentally tough with the bat so could he not be considered

Dhoni is certainly tough, but is he resouceful enough for leadership? On current evidence, it seems unlikely but I would not say impossible.

Even if the captains are not approaching retirement age they can be forced out of the game at any moment by a major injury or something akin to the golfer's "yips": the question is fair enough for ALL sides.

The answer in each and every case should be "the new model captain": forget inspirational figures who lead by example... captains in this day and age do most to earn their keep off the field. Bob Woolmer was the first of the 'modern' coaches... and modern coaches, with all their technology and analysis, need captains who are prepared to work with them on creating a team of disciplined, multi-dimesional players drilled in implementing plans created in backroom analysis and prepared to bury egos (and a life outside of cricket) in the cause of "over-achieving".

Strauss and Collingwood fit the profile for England. Younis Khan appears to fit the profile for Pakistan. I suspect Clarke and White exemplify the new model captain. Sarwan strikes me as a closer match than Gayle. Run the same sort of profiling on the other nations and you'll get all the most probable candidates

With Ricky Ponting still likely to be captain until after the Next World Cup 2010/11 I would'nt be surprised if a young bloke called Adam Crosthwaite comes through into the team and challenges for captaincy upon Ponting's retirement.

The next WC seems like an appropriate time to retire.

I hear Ritchie Benaud is impressed Ricky is about the same clothing size as him and is carefully putting away his collection of bone suits for Ricky to ressurect in his future media carreer as cheif commentator.

Australia - Ponting has a few years left in him, but I agree that Clarke might be in the running if he continues to mature.

South Africa - Graeme Smith is very young for a captain and he will remain. SA cricket is a different kettle of fish and they need his sort of pushy leadership for a few more years.

England - When Vaughan retires, which might be sooner than expected if his body keeps breaking down, I hope Paul Collingwood takes over.

New Zealand: Fleming will hand the reins over to Vettori.

Sri Lanka: Jayawardane will continue for a while and it is a bit early to speculate on younger players, but Dilshan looks promising.

Pakistan: Younis Khan will take over from Inzamam. He is mentally tougher than the fragile Mohammed Yousef, whose batting is likely to suffer if he is handed the captaincy.

India: Your guess is as good as mine. 4 experienced seniors - Kumble, Tendulkar, Ganguly & Dravid - are going to retire soon; of those left, none is consistent enough even to be certain of his own place, let alone be considered for leading the side. Handing the captaincy to Sehwag could be suicidal while I don't think Yuvraj has the necessary skills for leadership. It will be a lottery.
Ur spot on about Flems reins.. Vettori has got to be NZs next captain surely.. You only have to look at his last stats as the nz captain against Sri Lanka last year (nice)..
