Question Over19 in under 19?

Found this in a thread in another forum:

Both the players are members of England's under 19 cricket team and cricinfo says that they are older than that.

Ben James Wright-Over 19years
Adam Lyth-Over 19 years

They have been performing well as well. Now, I dont know what are the exact rules for qualification. Can someone find that out?

Note that Ben Write made a century in under19 test on August 5 2007 (scroll down on the profile page and see the image) when he was well over 19.

I wondered about that. I think in this country anyone who has not celebrated his/her 20th birthday is classified as "under 19". If you think that it does not make sense, join the club.

I don't believe there's any reason to believe that England play under different rules here. The u21 side in football includes anyone who is not yet 22. Don't ask me why. That appears to be what all the europeans play to.

I suspect if the Pakistan side thought England were cheating they would have said so!

No matter who is playing what game, when one says "Under 19", that should mean only those players who have not yet reached their 19th birthday sould be eligible. Just because Europeans bend the rules does not make it correct. Otherwise, the title is utterly meaningless.

How can a guy who is 19 years and 7 months old be "under 19"?

Thats interesting. But is that what other teams do as well is the question. As long as the same rule applies equally to all the teams, its fine. But if one team is getting unfair advantage because things are done in a different way in a certain country, its not fine.

I can't find anything concrete - but this is from the regulations for the Under-19's World Cup:

Quote:
To compete in the ICC U19 CWC Players from Full Member countries must be under the age of 19 on the 1st of September before the event takes place and Players from Associate or Affiliate Member countries must be under the age of 20 on the 1st of September before the event takes place.
However, I can't find anything else at the moment - confusing.

Now i am sure we aren't breaking any rules and there must be a cutoff date somewhere, for example players must be under 19 on January 1st 2007 and can play for the rest of that year.

I know in football they work under a similar mode and if you are under 21 at a certain time you can still be playing when you are nearly 23.Strange but true.

But where are the rules? Strange but like adamberry pointed out, there are no rules on this....at least on the ICC website. There are rules for under19 world cup but nothing on other U19 tournaments.

I suppose rules are easier to bend or break when they don't exist.
