reverse sweep...but only by Andy flower.

BTW - this thread seems rather odd on a page dedicated to patriotic posturing.

Good to see a cricket thread - Hmm being patriotic here, I think the master of the reverse sweep has to be Botham, who I believe invented the shot.

My favourite cricket shot without doubt is a well times cover drive, IMO no shot beats that - including the exciting hook or pull shot.

Saqlain invented the doosra but murali mastered it

I have not watched too much of Botham and even then it was mainly his bowling or "slogging" but i'm sure he thinks he was master of it...and could very well be! But for me, familiarity has bred content - i have to stick with flower.

Well I am surprised - I could not find a reverse sweep shot on you tube, however i did spot this gem from Pietersen YouTube - Pietersen's reverse-sweep for SIX off Murali
In some ways it's not the reverse sweep that Botham would have used, more Mal Loyish (sorry Pietersen fans).
Can't find a clip on you tube for the reverse sweep with Andy Flower either.

Does anyone recall the "stroke" thar John Emburey used to play on the leg side? It was some sort of a hybrid between a sweep and a pull and he used to fall over every time he played it. Still, he even managed to hit a few sixes with that one!

Strange how there is no love for the cover drive...not only does it require some complex footwork, it is also one of the more stylish drives (with the cover drive) and is a crucial shot in many batsman's arsenals.

Eh? I thought the cover drive has notched up more points than any other stroke in the poll? Did you mean the on drive?

I think this is my second ref to the cover drive in this thread.

The cover drive is the most elegant of shots. I could watch a nicely played cover drive over and over again.

However, the most useful shot is probably the backfoot drive. It gives a wide scoring zone and can be used to counter "back of a length" bowlers by skilled batsmen.
