Article about cricket in New York Times

As you all know, not many people follow cricket in the U.S., and articles about it are rare.

But there was this interesting one from the New York Times earlier this week, I am linking to it and to the corrections that followed.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/25/wo...25cricket.html

Enjoy.

I love that phrase "kamikaze cricket" and I wonder if Sreesanth's aggressive behaviour could be considered acceptable in that form of cricket? Afterall, David Lloyd describes T20 cricket in which "every ball is an event". Is Sreesanth the John McEnroe of cricket? When his appeal for a wicket is turned down by the umpire I half expect him to scream at the umpire "You cannot be serious!" or "You are the pits of the world!" Sree "Superbrat" Sreesanth does have a ring to it.

The article was written by Somini Sengupta who appears to be based in New Delhi. So, although it's written for the U.S. market, it is an Indian point of view. What makes the article interesting is that the author is obviously not a cricket sports writer. His articles for The New York Times covers a wide range of topics. As such, he sees cricket in India as an allegory for India's "anxieties and aspirations". He also quotes a cricket historian.

it's interesting to see the Americans once again looking at cricket. I can't see it replacing American football or baseball, but it's still nice to see.
