I hope that Flintoff's career isn't pretty much over, but this is very bad news.

Apparently the operation was a success, but this isn't exactly promising.

At this rate SS if he does get back - he will be to old to be effective, tough on England they find a Flintoff only to find he is as brittle as Henry Cooper was, who kept loseing matches because he was prone to cuts.

As a bowler if the short term - Flintoff is IMO irreplacable.

Given that England's bowling stocks for the Sri Lanka tour are considerably weakened there is even more need to strengthen the batting to ensure the bowlers have decent totals to defend. Ramprakash must now be seriously considered for selection to replace the out-of-form Strauss.

Flintoff's bowling in the ODI format is nothing short of excellent, I think the ODI arena is where Flintoff will be missed most, I would love to see a fully fit Flintoff slip into the side, IMO at the expense of Anderson, who has taken wickets but been expensive.
