The Indian batsmen have taken full advantage of a depleted Pakistan bowling attack. It is a shame Sachin and Dravid missed out on big scores. But India are in a very strong position at the end of 1st day.

I really cant believe what Pakistan is doing. Isnt it better to play new players than go with half fit players? Shoaib was coughing his lungs out on the field. Sami was also half fit. What are they doing on the filed? Tanvit is the fittest one and he went for so many runs. They asked him to bowl off spin and he went for even more runs. Are they taking their cricket seriously?

India batted superbly punishing all the weak deliveries....and they were plenty of them. Jaffer has now completed his 200 and perhaps looking for a 300.

This certainly is not an ideal preparation for the Indian batsmen for the upcoming Australian tour.

I know what you are saying, but I do not - never have - agreed to that sort of outlook. When a team is playing an important international match such as this Test, they should concentrate on giving their best on the day and then in the match and not think about the next tour. That is a bad habit started by England I believe, particularly in the summer before the Ashes down under later that year. IMO, every match is important as the other and it is best to focus on the present.

In any case, good to see Ganguly score a ton on his home turf at last. Looks like Laxman might get one as well.

Only 15 runs in the last 10 overs to tea with score moving from 537/5 to 552/5. This is very strange given the tiring Pakistan bowling at this stage of the match. And that too with Dhoni batting!!!!!

I agree that each match should be given equal importance. But India have never won a series in Australia and if they were to do so this time, some serious preparation is a must. Playing on slow, low batting pitches against a weak bowling attack and scoring heavily against them will only give a false sense of security to the Indian Batsmen.

One of the reasons for that could be over-preparation, something that tends to narrow flexibility and instinct. While preparation and form are very important, there should be room for playing with hearts as well.

The discussion is going off-track here. Your points may be valid in general in sports. But playing on slow, low Calcutta pitch against a depeleted Pakistan bowling attack is definately not going to help Indian batsmen in Australia, where things will be completely different.

And I do not believe over-preparation has been the cause of poor showing by the Indians in Australia over the years (except 2003-04). The only reason why Indians have not done well in Australia is because the Indian batsmen are used to Indian pitches where the ball hardly bounces over knee whereas Australian pitches are in general bouncier. If anything Indians have always been under- prepared for taking on Australia in Australia.

195/5. Avoiding follow on is becoming more and more difficult for Pakistan. Misbah has got to his 50 and Akmal is also looking good. India are still favorites to win it. Draw is a slim possibility but given the way Pakistan's top and middle order batted in this innings, I think a win for India is more likely.
