Singh charged with racial abuse

Details are a bit thin at the moment. But the major Aussie news stables are running with it right now.

Harbhajan faces racism charge | The Courier-Mail

Very interesting developments, particularly as it is at a crucial juncture of the test, and indeed series, and that it has taken place in the hotbed of Sydney. It might ignite a much needed fire in the Aussies spirit, that's for sure.

I want to know what was said. It would be foolish of Harbhajan to make a 'racist comment' after all the controversy from the ODI series in India. If its a general verbal exchange, its no big deal. But if its really racist, Harbhajan should be punished enough to set an example.

Well Harbhajan has denied saying anything racist to Andrew Symonds according to the age.com AU news.

Quote:
This time, the ugly issue might have spilled over onto the field, with Harbhajan being summoned to a hearing with match referee Mike Procter after play tonight. He was charged with a high-level offence covering "language or gestures that offends, insults, humiliates, intimidates, threatens, disparages or vilifies another person on the basis of that person's race, religion, gender, colour, descent or national ethnic origin". The offence carries a suspension of between two and four Tests.
There is it seems going to be a proper investigation.

Quote:
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland confirmed an investigation was under way but refused to elaborate.
I wonder who will be believed?.

Only just seen the highlight of the incident. The umpires had a word with Singh at the time, I dont know what was said, but it didn't look that serious from Symonds reaction, but i may be mistaken.

I find this a bit extrodanary. If an Indian has truly made a racist comment he should be banned for life; I really believe there is no place for it and we must have zero tolerence.

It is a bit unusual.

For an Indian to be on a racist charge against an aussie is like a German to be accusing an Israeli of anti semitism. On my travels I expected racist and prejudice comments from South Africans and speaking from my own experience this didn't happen. They were all excellent to a man. However I am sorry to say that the aussies I watched with were not shy in making some pretty unsavoury comments. In fact it was shamefull.

However if Singh made a racist comment against Symmonds as I said earlier that should be his lot. There is no excuse and he should not play again. No second chances; no excuses just ban him. End of story.

We do not know the facts and perhaps will never know the facts. But in my opinion, the Aussies are bad losers and this was the one time in many many matches that the Aussies were on the back-foot. So I would not rule this out as a ploy to upset Harbhajan and the Indian team. At the same time, if Harbhajan is guilty, he should be dealt with in the strictest possible manner.

Well, i agree that the Aussies are not the best losers. You only have to see Ponting's performances in England 2005 to come to that conclusion. Maybe that is why he is so successful. There is no point having a fatalistic acceptance of failure surely.

No, there is history between Symonds and Harbhajan

YouTube - What all this fuss about -Harbhajan & Aussies, Kochi 2007

I am not quite sure what the reason is. But i have some theories.

Symonds is big, strong, good looking, charismatic, all the guys like him, all the women love him. Then there is Harbhajan

Maybe Singh has "size" issues, like many little men do.

Singh is the only son with five older sisters. This must have an effect on a boy's ability to attain manhood. His little tantrums do strike me as a bit "girly" i must say.

This guy at youtube probably sums him up the best
YouTube - Harbhajan Singh acting like a **** vs Kevin Pietersen

And performances like this today don't help his cause either

YouTube - Ponting Wicket - India vs Australia 2008 2nd Test Day 4

I think the best way to solve the Symonds/Harbhajan vendetta is to put them in a boxing ring with no gloves, and people around the ropes to make sure no one tries to escape. It would all be over in ten seconds and the problem would be solved.

Its just a dirty mind game on part of ponting's big girls. They are just trying to get bhajji out of way.

A question Willow Wielder. Do you think Harbhajan is a nice friendly fellow on the field who never causes ill-feeling during a game, and who never causes controversy? Do you often see him applaud the Indian fielders in the field, or do you often see him abuse them? Is he a likeable, cheerful fellow - an asset to the team and the game?

Has Harbhijan been an innocent victim of the ill-feeling permeating this test series, or has he been solely responsible for it?

If your answer (deep down) is no to all these questions, then how can you go on supporting him, and how can you stand seeing him walking on to the field to represent your country?

seamer, i am not a big fan of harbhajan but i do feel without knowing the facts of the matter it is unfair to demonise bhajji.
Let the investigations be over by sunday then we will know who is the culprit and what is the punishment given?
Personaly i feel harbhajan needs a word of advice from some of the seniors in indian team on controlling his emotions on the field
