Maybe the WI should cause a diplomatic incident?

So the WI have a new opening batsman, Brenton Parchment, 25 years old making his debut vs South Africa.

He has now been charged with a Level 2 offence.....

Cricinfo - Brenton Parchment charged with Level 2 offence

Quote:
Brenton Parchment, West Indies' debutant opener, has been charged with a Level 2 breach of the ICC's Code of Conduct regulations for running into Dale Steyn while batting during the second day of the third Test in Durban
Parchment, if found guilty, could face a 50% fine on his match fee and/or a one Test or two ODI ban for his offence, which falls under article 2.4 of the ICC's Code of Conduct regulations which refers to "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play".

The on-field umpires, Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar, third umpire Brian Jerling and reserve umpire Zed Ndamane, reported to match referee Roshan Mahanama that Parchment had run into Steyn in the eighth over of West Indies' second innings.

Mahanama has scheduled a hearing on the matter, which would take place at the end of the third day's play.

And for your viewing pleasure, here is the incident

YouTube - parchment runs into steyn

Surely, as it seems occured in this video, a gentle word to Parchment and nothing more would suffice?

LOL - it's much ado about nothing, Steyn held his ground, and Parchment run into him causing no injury at all.

Definately a reason for the West Indies to chuck their toys out of the pram, but make sure they don't hit Steyn

Ninjaman has a fair point there about whether they should make a mountain out of a molehill.Fortunately the West Indies have more sense.

Having watched it a few times i think it is a joke that he is facing a disciplinary hearing.Bowlers take the **** too often by blocking the batsmans path when they go for a run,McGrath was a master at it.Serves them right.

I was expecting one or both of them to end up on their back on the ground when I read the topic header prior to watching the vid.

I am sure Glenn McGrath gave batsmen bigger bumps than that on a few occasion's and it got nowhere near being reported.

maybe not a diplomatic incident...but this is probably (and maybe my knowledge of zim cricketer's salaries is blocking my vision a bit) parchment's first REAL salary...and he's losing half of it. a little diplomatic eyebrow-raising could be in order!

If he's found guilty will the Windies threaten to cancel the tour and stay in their hotel rooms? What would happen then? The precedents been set.

But seriously he's facing a hearing over that? what a joke he hardly touched him.

There was a lot worse in the 80's and 70's

One of the umpires spoke to the batsman - you can see it in the clip. Surely Taufel or Dar should feel they have enough authority to close that particular incident there. This should not be a referee's case.

Hmmm... I'll reserve judgement until any punishment is meted out. I certainly agree that there is no punishment warranted for this, but it does look as if Parchment may have deliberately run and stuck out his elbow in order to cause contact with Steyn. A lot of rubbish about nothing really, but maybe the hearing will show to Parchment how silly doing it was in the first place and will prevent him doing the same in the future.

Parchment was eventrually fined 50% of his match fee.

Dale Steyn was fined 10% of his match fee for his unsporting actions towards Samuels when he got him out.

BBC SPORT | Cricket | Steyn and Parchment handed fines

Quote:
Whilst finding Steyn guilty, Mahanama recognised it was the 24-year-old's first offence of that nature and imposed a relatively small fine."
