Cricket Genius

The whole Idea of this thread is for posters to grab the title of cricket genius by solving question. Those who solve the question first set the next question. So here goes.
Question one
Who was the last international wicket taken by Sir Richard Hadlee, on what ground and in which country and in which year?

What an ignominious final wicket: a bit like bagging Tufnell or Walsh. I was impressed that Giles got Lara for his 100th wicket: now that's the way to manage a big moment with style. A bit like bringing up a batting landmark by slipping a Shane Warne delivery stylishly through the covers

I've an idea a couple of other recent landmarks have been notable in their own right... but can't recall: I'm sure at least one bowling target clocked in the WI series was a big scalp. There have been some duds as well though: century partnerships brought up with leg byes or horrible, miscued slogs of long hops and that sort of thing.

Any nominations for the most classily achieved landmark in cricket?

I'm assuming that Bradman's final innings will be, forever, the classic dud with the bat: any close challengers?

Next question

Statto got it right first but ernest was a close second , so statto gets to ask the next question.
As for dud final tests , Bradmans final innings will be forever remembered I suppose. Allegedly, Bradman had tears in his eyes (a thing he always denied) after the England team applauded him out to the pitch, which was why he scored 0. But he denied it, giving credit to the bowler. Very sporting.
Devon Malcolm as your last wicket, with your last ball is a bit of an anticlimax. Still, Sir Richard Hadlee was the only cricketer to get the Knighthood whilst still playing I believe.
Brian Lara being 12 short of 10,000 test runs was a surprise, i'd tuned in , waiting for the magic moment and he was out ! Still, he'll do it next time. or will he? If he loses the captaincy, he's gone on record as saying he'll quit test cricket completly..

I suppose we all remember the fairy tale endings , Nassar Hussain, Alec Stewart, frederick trueman 300th wicket (he took 307 and his average never went above 30)
But those 'damp squibers' are interesting.
What price Lara's 10,000 run is a big 6? or a streaky 4?

Botham The End

I think One of the saddest landmarks in cricket was in 1992,2nd Test against Pakistan at Lords,Ian Bothams last Test Match.

Botham Could score only 2,in Englands 1st innings, and could take no wickets in Pakistans 1st innings 0wks for 5 runs.

He faired no better in Englands 2nd innings, scoring just 6,in 25 balls,he did not bowl in Pakistans 2nd innings.

Now that is what I call a sad climax,to a man with such an illustrious career.

Not quite in Bradman's dud class but Botham's pair (of naughts) in his final Test as Captain v. Australia in 1981, was pretty depressing.

I remember the applause as the big man strode out to bat. No helmet and no bloody advertising break to stick between the exit and the entrance of the gladiators.

He wasn't a bad old captain... he'd lost three out of nine matches against the awesome 1980 West Indian side, a record David Gower could only dream about (perhaps that's why David thinks so highly of Both') and then one match v. Kim Hughes' Australians.

He was still obviously hugely popular, but his career average was about to subside to a low point of 29.85.
David Gower (89) had just gone (217-5) caught Alderman bowled Lillee and Botham was coming in at a time when victory wasn't really on though an earlier declaration, with a few more quick runs and getting some pressure on the openers... its a funny old game...!
In the event Botham lasted one ball, England batted a further 41 minutes adding 48 runs before declaring, and Graeme Wood batted throughout the 168 minute second innings to see Australia to an easy draw.

Botham's two innings had lasted four balls. And his captaincy was over.

Good times.

I remember the day Oliver, but despite Bothams form,I think the match was a draw, and I think it was at Lords.

He resigned, but he had to go,shame for the Aussies though, after what happened next.Good Suff.
