Anyone heard Courtney Brown speak? I've not, but if he speaks like he's from "ssaaaafff landan" I guess he just wanted to go off and play for West Indies.

I would direct you to the excellent article in the August Wisden about the lack of Black cricketers in England.

Question

looking at Petes avatar another section of the community is blatantly absent from the England cricket team

surely to be completely inclusive we should have six woman playing for the national side

An afterthought to my post.

I wonder if we are not getting many coloured players filtering though to the England team, could be caused in some way, by the amount of coloured players who play for our counties, each county is allowed 2 overseas players, that is 2/11ths, not an insignificant amount.
If you look at the England bowling attack, one key player missing is so bad, he is so hard ro replace.

NE - that's not a polite abbreviation, mate! Also, surely Jason Gillespie has Aboriginal roots?

Vaughan and his team have given England something of which the nation can be proud. It would be even nicer if that pride extended to all of England.
Every fourth person in the world is Chinease, every 6th is Indian, yet if we were selecting a world eleven for most sports, we won't have any Chinease or Indian players in them, cricket in India's case will be the only exception. In the same way, just because there is a large population of Asians and Blacks in UK, doesn't mean British sports teams should definately have coloured players. Much like in the same way that the majority of the Zimbabwean and South Africans are black, yet there is no reason, what so ever, that the majority of sporting teams in these two countries should be black. Merit alone should be the only creteria for selection. If there are coloured players good enough, they will almost enevitably get noticed and rise through the ranks, as they have in all parts of the world, there is no reason to frett over the issue. The pride already extents to all over England, even beyond England, those Asian immigrants who have been setteled in England for so long, will follow and support England regardless of there not being Asian in the team.

ZR it's probably not helpful for you to wade into an issue without knowing the full facts. In any case, it seems you have apparently misunderstood what I perceive is the point behind the article, and definitely misunderstood my posts.

Where did the article argue in favour of positive discrimination? Your lengthy diatribe on the impracticalities surrounding affirmative action is thus irrelevant.

And where has this admirable but vacous sentiment been disputed, either in the article or in the various posts on this thread?

Another seemingly strange assertion. Do you live here? What statistical proof do you base this claim on? For that matter, do you even have substantional anecdotal evidence to support this? I have spent years of my life amongst thousands of British Asians, first, second and third generation immigrants, and nearly all the cricket fans amongst them have been united in their complete lack of support for the English cricket team, and their (often) inexplicable support for whoever is playing against England on the day. There are quite a few British Asians who are members of this board; how many of them support England, even as a second team, and how many support India, Pakistan, West Indies, in fact anyone but England? This is by no means statistically sound, but provides a workable hypothesis for discussion, in the absence of sound empirical data.

PS: Just to clarify, I am in no means condoning (or for that matter condemning) those who choose to support, or to not support any particular cricket team. I am not English or British, but as I currently live in the UK and have a strong affection for the country, its culture and its people, I wholeheartedly support the English football and rugby teams (though the former from a safe distance). However, in cricket there is only one team for me :-)

NE: I'm sure you didd'nt mean this in the way it sounds which is basicly suggesting that Aussies only like people of White European descent playing in their national sporting teams. Something which couldent be furthur from the truth in a country as cultuarly diverse as Australia is.
