For anyone who has never been to the Riverside ground, it kind of sits in a bowl with the Hills on more or less all sides and the river running just off to one side curving around the ground on the castle side. (BTW the turrets you see on Lumley castle are made of wood and painted to look like stone, Lumley castle is a big old house rather than a real castle Looks good on tv though)

Anyway back to point, the hills kind of shelter the ground so it doesn't always rain at the ground even if it is raining most other places around and about. The river and the clouds, does tend to add to the heavy atmosphere and helps the ball swing though, and the fact that the water table is fairly high (the river really is very close) can make the pitch a bit lively.

Alas not, according to the beeb, offered no shot pitched on leg, given LBW. Personally getting out with offering a shot is a cardinal sin.

He mis-judged it big time... Vaughnie got a good ball. Tresco has had a big chance, should have been out LBW..

Bell is looking sublime...

Lets get back to the debate - Bangladesh are now over 150 runs a drift after just one day... The way England are playing they could declare at Lunch and bowl Bangladesh out by Tea, how the hell does this help develop the sport in Bangladesh.

What will they have actually learned.. You can talk about New Zealands or India's lack of victories early on, but when they first began where they ever as truely awful as this?

37 Tests - 1 win - 4 Draws - of those losses 21 have been by an innings + and 7 by more than 7 wickets in 75% of games they were thrashed..

Compare that with Sri Lanka's first 37 Tests

2 wins- 19 Draws - loses only 9 were by an innings + and 5 were by more than 7 wickets

India's

3 wins - 17 Draws - loses 9 by an innings and 9 by 7+ wickets

New Zealand

0 wins but 20 Draws - loses 7 by an innings an d4 by 7+ wickets

and Zim

3 wins - 16 draws - loses 6 by an innings and 6 by +7 wickets

It is not just the lack of wins that stands out - it is the manner and size of their loses that makes Bangladesh different from all the other Test nations on introduction....

It's like history repeating itself...apart from Bangladesh having picked up a couple of consolation wickets.

Flanflinger, England could declare first thing tomorrow and bowl Bangladesh out by lunch, although I doubt they will!

It's hard to get too excited about cricket matches like this... it's all so predictable.

Still, nice to see Harmison get among the wickets, and another big knock by Tresco. Bell looking very good.

What a day of cricket.. Everything its starting to fall in place in the bowling department with Harmsion and Jones looking strong and also Flintoff reliable as ever, i hope Hoggard improves.

Strauss is a worry because hes done the same thing now twice against Bangladesh. Hes had an LBW shout thrown out when it was a clear one, and then despite this he falls for it again and loses his wicket. I hope he looks into this because he completly misjudged that one.

Vaughan has finally proven he can score at a quick rate so maybe he can play in ODIs and Tresco was on fire again today only making one slip which i was baffled wasn't given out but a tremendous quick 50 after his hundred.

Unavoidably out all day yesterday, and will be again today. That makes it the first time for ages that I will have missed a whole series. Disappointing all round.

Hear, hear. I was at work last week and missed all but the final morning. This week I'm off for half term and it's on bloody Sky!

At least my timing is better for the Ashes. After day 2 of the first test, I'll be finishing work and having a few weeks off. So I'll catch the best of the action. Roll on July 21!
