He winged about bad light v England, when his deliberation over field placings meant that one over took 20 minutes. Then we beat them. Ha!

Ashley Giles is, in fact, one of the most popular players in the England side, from a spectators point of view - he is in fact a true national treasure, so there

Giles may or may not be a negative bowler anymore, but the fact that many Test umpires are still unsure does leave reasonable doubt in the mind of any unbiased observer (which many of you England supporters palpably are not). I personally admire his gutsy performances, both with the bat and in the field, often in the face of uncalled for abuse from England "fans"; however, I also acknowledge that he is disliked by many cricket followers overseas, for once being a pathetic excuse for a Test spinner, and being so English on top of it. Unfair? Perhaps, but then so are most of the absurd caricatures, insults and childish jibes presented on this thread.

Maybe from the England spectators point of view, but certainly not universally. The world does not revolve around England anymore, you know

In any case, and I am sure you can comment on this better than I can Kirsty, many of those keen to praise Gilo to high heaven now were the ones insulting him in the most unkind manner all too recently; sensible supporters such as you who have maintained a consistent and balanced view throughout are few and far between.

Really? Is that why till 18 months ago he was quite ineffectual, at least as a Test match winning slow bowler?

I've not heard of any umpire question Giles' bowling, calling it defensive? Have you any examples of when this has happened?

Good, so do I!

I don't know if you are acussing me of "keen to praise Gilo now when I have previously insulted him", but I, for one, have always been on the side of Giles. You will be hard pushed to find a contridicting example on this forum, that's for sure. I've never put the man down, always been fair and given him deserved credit. He does, it is true, have limitations to his game. But he has worked so hard on his cricket over the past few years to really put in some good performances with the ball and bat. He has won a few matches with the ball in 2004, taking a few five-fors against West Indies. On top of that a 40ish not out against NZ last year was a terrific attacking innings to defy NZ a potential victory, I think he put on 70 ish with Thorpe to knock off the runs, when he came in NZ only needed 4 more wickets. He deserves his England place and has been rated number 9 in the world. He is underrated by many but an important part of this successful England side.

It has been called defensive by many commentators and former players (not all of them Aussie!), though sometimes unfairly.

However, more pertinent is the fact that he still has many half-decent LBW shouts turned down due to some pre-conceived notion. It seems many umpires have not tweaked on to the fact (or had not till recently) that he is not merely bowling a negative line outside leg as he may have routinely done in the past, and his stock delivery now is a genuine wicket-taking ball.

LOL. Why would I ever be addressing you in such a manner? This really is funny - I never address personal jibes such as this at anyone specific, not when I am awake and talking sense at least, and certainly not at one of our esteemed members! Apologies if it came across that way, certainly was not what was meant when I was typing it.
