England 44 - Australia 60

KP gets busted down to a 7 for his poor protection of tailenders which, were I a more suspicious man I would label as batting for the red ink, and his rubbish catching. Simon Jones gets a 6 for bowling well without luck, better fielding off his bowling would have pushed him to 7. Giles gets his single point for the run out - just because it turned out to be inconsequential in the larger scheme is irrelevant; it was very important at the time.

To award higher ratings than these would have been to demean the whole process; if Ponting gets 6 with one failure and one below 50 knock, what will we get when he makes two meaty contributions, eg a 60 and 70? That probably takes him right up to 9 or 10 on that scale. And then when he scores a match-winning 140 or a match-saving 120 (the former being quite a regular event for him), his rating would have to go right off the scale.

My approach is slightly different: A rating of ten should be for a player achieving their potential and making a match-winning or match-saving contribution (eg a ten-for, or a big hundred, etc). Once you work down from that, the rest is fairly simple. And if a player has done nothing, he gets a zero; no points for simply turning up to collect the paycheck and standing out in the sun for two days.

I agree some achievements merit more than ten; but those are are, eg Lara's 400 not out or Kumble's ten wickets in an innings. Those should not be measured on this scale, being 'freak' occurrences.

Pardon my ignorance,Oliver, but at what stage of the game did England think they could win? Maybe you mean when Trescothick & Strauss walked out to open Englands first innings, but after the first 4 overs I can't recollect any other stage of the game that anyone would have thought England were going to win.

I don't believe that was the case at all. For me, Willjoy is way off the mark.

If that's your attitude Wiljoy, first of all you should change your signature, as you clearly don't believe it, and second of all you should change your name to Killjoy.

On the third morning England were in with a realistic chance of winning. With a quick dismissal of the tail and a good batting performance victory was well within their grasp.

Obviously that didn't happen though.
