England have been in two very good positions at 160-1 and 290-4. 400 is a minimum surely? With the start we had i would have been expecting 500 !

To be honest - there is no need. Despite the age, they are very fit and are capable of longer bowling spells that most test bowlers in their mid-twenties. There is really no room for an allrounder in the test side, otherwise Symonds would be in the team. Don't let the arbitrary number next to the age column fool you - they train very hard and are very fit. These guys won the series in the extreme heat of India less than a year ago. I have doubts that England's bowlers will have the stamina to last the distance there.

I don't disagree with anything you say. I just think it is amazing that Australia have the team ability to go into games with only 4 bowlers and consistantly win test matches.

Who was the last real Aussie all-rounder?
Do you think that Adam Gilchrist replaces the need for an all rounder? (I think that'd be true if he batted at 6 allowing for 5 specialist bowlers to be picked)

Australia have never realy looked for an all rounder - I think this is an English idea that there must be an all rounder in your side.

In the Seventies we relied on our pace attack - Lillie and Thomson.
In the Eighties we sucked and where rebuilding.
In the nineties we had the structure to be dominate with 4 bowlers and a good batting line up and have continued that into the 2000's (Naughties).
I think when you have a good batting line up, and good quality bowling the need for an all rounder is not needed.

For some reason I can't edit the main post anymore, so:

Thread started in light of discussion of over rates from the first test and associated comments that a session by session analysis was needed.

Day 1
Morning Session: 27 Overs (7 by spinner)
Afternoon Session: 27 Overs (10 by spinner)
Evening Session: 25.2 Overs (8.2 by spinner, session curtailed by rain)

Day 2
Morning Session 24.5 Overs (5 by spinner)

Again, not exactly brilliant from England considering that 10 overs were bowled by Gilo.
