I challenged that one, Beny (quelle suprise!) and was berated for it too! Perhaps this is the reason Jones gets inthe side, because people are happy for him to let 26 byes through in a Test (on a not very dodgy pitch) and catch a few easy ones. According to some the measure of a keeper is how many you catch, like he caught a few against Bangladesh - the majority were very easy and wouldn't have been dropped by most club's 2nd XI keepers! Gilchrist had a far better game.

As an English fan I'm bemused by Lemming's ratings too! Even after he's explained them.

As for saying Jones performed better than Gilchrist.....I'm off for a lie down....

We were very close to losing that match. Three runs away in fact.

My rankins for the first and scond test.

Out of 10.

Test one.
Australia
Langer 7/10. A good start to the first innings, unlucky to be run out in the second
hayden 4/10. He's not scratching around at the crease, but definatled lacked presence
Ponting 6/10 A better second innings.
martyn 6/10 looked class, but seemed vunerable at the beginning
Clarke 8/10 built the platform for an aussie win
Kaitch 7/10 chipped in with clarke to make sure the aussies won
Gilchrist 4/10 took 2 catches and had a 'quiet match' but didn't do anything wrong behind the sticks. batting seems to be a worry
Warne 7/10 showed he could still take wickets
Lee 5/10 despite showing real promise and fighting his way back into the fold, he still needs to go up an extra gear
Gillespie 3/10? I don't know that he was really bowled enough to make a judgment; A poor performance?
Mcgrath 10/10 World class. Arguably The best fast bowler on the planet.
Total 77/110
England

Trescothic 5 a poor first innings and a slightly better second one. needs to fire to give the others a chance
Strauss 4 a poor first innings and a slightly better second one. needs to fire to give the others a chance
Vaughan. 3 Scratching around, obvious technical flaws here.
Bell 2 just looked scared.
Pieterson 7. for a test debut at lords all it lacked was a century.
Flintoff 5. looks like the aussies did their homework. bowling well
G. Jones 2 poor keeping and batting
Giles 1? not bowled enourgh to make a comment
Harmison 8 lion hearted first morning saw australia 5/87 and 8 wickets in a match is good.
S. Jones 5 needs consistency
Hoggard 4 just loos tired

46/110

England's bowling looked good but the batting had faults.

Test 2

Trescothic 8 but should have got a ton
Strauss 5 but looks like he's warne's bunny
Vaughan 5 Was it good captincy? certainly more imaginative than Ponting. Batting still poor.
Bell 5 Looked better, needs a score now
Pieterson 8 showed it wasn't a one off
Flintoff 9 excellent all round performance.
G. Jones 5 still poor batting, better behind the stumps but missed a stumping
Giles. 5 A much better bowling and batting performance.
Hoggard. 3 Looked tired
Harmison 6 bowled well on a pitch not suited to him
S. Jones 6 Batting looks better. But he's supposed to be a bowler!!

60/110

Australia.
Langer. 7 Looks class.
Hayden 0 Looks crass
Ponting 5 unimaginative captincy, but must be thinking 'so near yet so far'
Martyn 5 unluckily run out in the first innings
Clarke 7 looks a very good middle order bat
kaitch 5 just didn't settle; needs to give himself time
Gilchrist 7 ran out of partners first time , second out to giles
Gillespie 2 deary me.
Kasprowitch 4 Bowled poorly . wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory.
Lee. 8. The gutsiest australian on the field. Should have wrapped his bat round Kaspa's head.
Warne 8 If australia had won, he'd have been the man of the match. Trod on his stumps, and cost australia runs

59/110

England did outplay australia for most of the match and did deserve to win, but they 'got out of jail.'

Teams win sesions, and Lee and Kaspa obvously won the last one, so that was why OZ only won by three, had the game carried on the night before, then I dount the 3 runs would have come into it.

I was going to mark Vaughan up because we won, and Ponting down because they lost... but actually that piece of marking is erroneous given that Vaughan's stodgy inability to instruct his bowlers how to remove two "tailenders" almost resulted in England snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Bell has been marked up, because he looked completely in control (well as completely as he has done in this series so far) and he didn't touch the delivery that resulted in his premature return to the pavilion.
Possibly Strauss, Hayden, Clarke and Gilchrist have (at five) too many points... but they all contributed a little with the bat, Strauss in the all important first innings and the others under the exerted pressure of both innings.
The bowlers pretty much speak for themselves... again I have tried to award points for wickets... but I've marked Hoggard down again for bowling rubbish. The English conditions bowler who can't bowl in English conditions. Lee and Flintoff have extra marks for their batting obviously, and Simon Jones and Kasprowicz one extra point-a-piece. All that said, I can't award Warne, who took ten wickets, a full ten points unless he is on the winning side.
