Looks like McGrath should have stayed on the physio's couch.

Dumb, very dumb... McGrath could wind up with a fivefer in the first innings following Pietersen's stupid shot.

The last five wickets perhaps?

Incidentally, the last time Australia conceded 300 runs for only three wickets (I think that was CMJ's stat on Radio 4) was also in 2005 but in Christchurch against New Zealand, obviously.

New Zealand's first innings finished at 433 all out, with McGrath taking the last six wickets to fall, he hadn't taken one to that point... his first coming when the score was 355.

I, for one, will be keeping my feet off the ground should the England score stop any time this morning at 355 for five.

Australia went on to make 432 in their first innings, bowled New Zealand out for 131 and won by nine wickets.
Katich and Gilchrist (the man-of-the-match) put on 212 for the seventh wicket, in that first innings... so Australia had been in some trouble.

Vaughan, Pietersen, Flintoff, Geraint Jones and Giles should have looked at that scorecard throughout the final session last night. England must make 550 in this innings, just as we should have at Edgbaston. We cannot trust to luck continually throughout this match, and Vaughan had three or four large slices of it... we will not win by two runs again. If the opportunity arises to grind the opposition into the dust, then it should be taken.

Yes, you were right.

But 444 isn't looking very big now.
