And lets face it; commentating on cricket is not a partiuclarly ardous day job either, nor one which requires great intellectual or physical exertion. He is in the entertainment business, and like all other entertainers (including the Irish duo mentioned earlier in this thread), deserves a pat on the back and no more.

It's a fair point you make, Maranello, but the fact is that the UK Honours system at present does recognise entertainers and sportsmen far more readily than it does people who might be considered more worthy. It wouldn't honestly bother me if the whole system was bagged, but while it's there I still think that there's a good chance for Benaud to be recognised in its senior levels. It's a lifetime given to the game which would be recognised, I guess. Anyway, not one to get particularly passionate about! Cricket should re-start in about seven minutes from now.

I think it will be a very long time before either McGrath or Warne will get a knighthood. You don't deserve a knighthood just because you are a good player, you should get a knighthood when you have done a service to the game. For example, a player might play, then spend some time coaching and working with youngsters, maybe spend time and show initiative with respect to promoting the game and maybe do alot of media work regarding the game.

For the record, as a Briton, I personally would much prefer to see only British people knighted. It's not that Australians etc. don't deserve credit which might warrant a knighthood, but I would prefer to see the award go only to British nationals.

I certainly don't agree with honourary knighthoods going to americans etc., I think it's a bit of a farce.

First cricketer on my list, Sir Ian Botham!

So you would have been against the greatest cricketer of them all, Sir Garfield Sobers, being knighted??

Yes, but unfortunately it does mean that local traders do tend to add the odd percentage onto their bills to you.

Knighthood = rich. Apparently. Unfortunately it isn't always true.

With the system the way it is, i.e. the opportunity to award knighthoods to overseas players, then there is no reason not to award Garfield Sobers such an accolade, he blatently deserves recognition.

My point is that I don't agree with the system and would much prefer the Queen to award British knighthoods only to British people. The British Queen - I personally feel - should only recognise British achievement via a knighthood.
