Waseem,

I watched Pathan when he played for Middlesex last season, and to be honest I thought he was distinctly average, no better than some other medium pace trundlers that inhabit the county circuit. I was very disappointed as I had heard so much about him.

I just feel he has a long way to go to reach the pedestal that some fans have put him on. Put it this way, he is India's No 1 seamer, and on current form I wouldn't have him in place of Liam Plunkett or Jimmy Anderson and they are not even in England's top 4!!

So I don't speak purely from stats, I speak on the basis that I have actually seen him bowl.. live in the flesh at the ground...

There is not much difference in ODI figures between Pathan and Anderson

Pathan 48 matches 79 wickets 25.93 econ 4.99 s/r 31.12

Anderson 44 matches (bowled in 43) 66 wickets 25.50 econ 4.77 s/r 32.04.

Very interesting stats!! Especially when you consider that Pathan has been a better bowler in ODI's than in Tests

Goes to prove my point that he is just one of a number of promising bowlers around, that he is not "the most" promising...

Very interesting stats indeed, I had forgotten Jimmy's ODI average was so good. Any idea what it was before South Africa?

I have not yet seen Pathan bowl, my opinion is based on stats and word of mouth, which on balance shows that he is potentially an excellent all-rounder but possibly not a leading strike bowler.

I would say Pathan is up there with the most promising all rounders in the world. As a bowler though, there are about 10 or more as promising as him.

I agree. It will be interesting to see how the young bowlers under 25 go and who will be the most promising after the World Cup. Some of those pitches, especially at the Beausejour stadium in St Lucia are batting paradise.

I think the difference between Pathan and Anderson is on batting, you would have Pathan in an ODI side as he is a good batsmen and can hit the ball well.

Well he didn't play in South Africa after his nightmare 4th Test.
His figures were 39 games 59 wickets at 25.49 econ 4.74 s/r 32.2.
They dropped him when they decided to pick a bowler who could bat i.e Wharf in the summer of 2004 but since super subs he is back. In 2003 he took 41 ODI wickets and was at number 10 in the ICC rankings but was still dropped. Anderson has the best strike rate of any English bowler past or present. (qualification 1000 balls)

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that. I couldn't remember whether he had played the ODIs as well as tests or not.

Never seen him live, but based on Scorecards he looks like a good bowler who has the skill to score 50's and if not better.

I think that he will turn into a all-rounder, and one of the best around today.
